FTSE 100 movers: Vodafone, Smith & Nephew rise as results beat forecasts

Thu, 06th Feb 2014 12:51

Telecoms giant Vodafone gained on Thursday after third-quarter revenue declined by a less-than-expected 3.6 per cent. Chief Executive Vittorio Colao also said he was optimistic that sales trends would begin to improve.Medical equipment manufacturer Smith & Nephew also beat analysts' forecasts as it registered a strong end to 2013 with underlying revenue growth picking up in the fourth quarter. Consumer goods giant Reckitt Benckiser was making gains after Credit Suisse lifted its rating for the stock from 'neutral' to 'outperform', saying that investors should look past concerns regarding its struggling pharmaceuticals division.Leading the fallers was drugmaker AstraZeneca after saying that 2013 annual revenue fell 6% to $25.7bn as it was hurt by competition from generic brands. TUI Travel underwhelmed despite saying that it is confident of hitting full-year forecasts after underlying operating losses narrowed in the first quarter.Aerospace and automotive engineer GKN was making gains today after data showed that new car registrations in the UK rose at an annual rate of 7.6% in January. Sentiment was also lifted after European auto groups Daimler and Volvo reported quarterly profits that beat expectations.Catering giant Compass was slightly higher after keeping expectations for the full-year organic results unchanged after a "good" first quarter. However, the company warned that adverse currency movements may dampen statutory numbers due to the recent strength in sterling.FTSE 100 - RisersReckitt Benckiser Group (RB.) 4,809.00p +3.26%Hargreaves Lansdown (HL.) 1,381.00p +2.68%Vodafone Group (VOD) 221.35p +2.52%Smith & Nephew (SN.) 893.00p +2.12%Sports Direct International (SPD) 695.00p +2.06%Prudential (PRU) 1,257.00p +2.03%International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (CDI) (IAG) 420.40p +1.89%GKN (GKN) 394.90p +1.75%Fresnillo (FRES) 805.50p +1.70%WPP (WPP) 1,293.00p +1.65%FTSE 100 - FallersAstraZeneca (AZN) 3,781.50p -2.46%RSA Insurance Group (RSA) 102.60p -0.97%Mondi (MNDI) 932.50p -0.75%Johnson Matthey (JMAT) 3,208.00p -0.68%TUI Travel (TT.) 421.80p -0.61%Pearson (PSON) 1,078.00p -0.55%Tullow Oil (TLW) 845.50p -0.47%Tate & Lyle (TATE) 752.50p -0.40%Coca-Cola HBC AG (CDI) (CCH) 1,595.00p -0.25%British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSY) 891.50p -0.22%BC
