FTSE 100 movers: Rio Tinto gains on production increase

Thu, 28th Nov 2013 15:03

Rio Tinto gained strongly after saying it will increase its mine production capacity at lower capital cost per tonne at its iron ore business in Western Australia. The miner expects mine production capacity will increase by more than 60m tonnes per year between 2014 and 2017 from a run base rate of 290m tonnes per annum by the end of the first half of 2014.Fellow miner Anglo American was also in demand after Liberum Capital upgraded its rating for the stock to 'hold'.Hargreaves Lansdown was also making decent gains. On Wednesday Numis Securities upped its target price on the stock was upped from 1,006p to 1,027p. Support services provider Capita also climbed on news it has been been selected as the preferred bidder to provide both front and back office services to RWE npower, a UK-based electricity and gas supply generation company. Heading the other way was DIY retailer Kingfisher, after a weak performance in France held back third-quarter retail profits. Retail profit growth came in at just 1.7%, less than analysts had forecast.Housebuilder Persimmon declined after the Bank of England announced it will scale back a scheme to boost mortgage lending as evidence begins to point to a housing market boom. Investors in Imperial Tobacco and British American Tobacco were also feeling a bit under the weather today after reports that the UK government will announce a U-turn on plain cigarette packaging. David Cameron is expected to unveil a fresh review into plain packaging to examine new evidence on whether the measure will discourage young smokers.Plumbing and heating products group Wolseley also disappointed with its first-quarter results as trading continues to be mixed across its key regions. The US and UK were still bolstering top-line growth, but like-for-like sales in Canada, Nordic, France and Central Europe all declined.FTSE 100 - RisersRio Tinto (RIO) 3,269.50p +4.16%Hargreaves Lansdown (HL.) 1,222.00p +2.60%Anglo American (AAL) 1,371.00p +2.43%Fresnillo (FRES) 829.50p +2.09%Old Mutual (OML) 197.90p +2.01%Barclays (BARC) 267.60p +1.94%Vedanta Resources (VED) 890.50p +1.77%Glencore Xstrata (GLEN) 312.45p +1.73%BAE Systems (BA.) 433.40p +1.69%Capita (CPI) 992.50p +1.53%FTSE 100 - FallersPersimmon (PSN) 1,167.00p -6.34%Kingfisher (KGF) 375.50p -5.18%easyJet (EZJ) 1,408.00p -2.49%International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (CDI) (IAG) 367.80p -2.31%Imperial Tobacco Group (IMT) 2,309.00p -2.20%Travis Perkins (TPK) 1,795.00p -2.02%Wolseley (WOS) 3,342.00p -1.56%Compass Group (CPG) 927.00p -1.23%Coca-Cola HBC AG (CDI) (CCH) 1,724.00p -1.09%Marks & Spencer Group (MKS) 485.30p -0.88%NR
