Friday preview: Chrysalis, Record

Thu, 14th Oct 2010 16:09
Music publisher Chrysalis claimed at its last trading update in August that it was outperforming the market, though as the music business likes to give the impression that it is hardly selling a single record thanks to illegal file downloading, doing better than the market may be no great shakes.Nevertheless, in the first nine months of its financial year (which runs to end-September), Chrysalis's consolidated net publisher's share (NPS) - the money it banks after paying royalties to songwriters and other interested parties - was up 15.6% on the corresponding period of last year.Earnings are generally weighted towards the final financial quarter and so a year-on-year increase in consolidated NPS for the full year looks to be on the cards. The company seems to be putting the problems of the past behind it. At the half-year stage it reduced losses to £0.5m from £2.6m and chief executive Jeremy Lascelles's performance has been so full of the X-factor that he has been nominated for "leader of the year" as part of the National Business Awards, an event sponsored by the Scotsman newspaper. Moving on from the music business to, appropriately enough, a company called Record, the currency manager will give an update on the second quarter of its financial year. The company saw a decline in assets under management (AuM) at the end of June to $29.5bn from $34.0bn at the end of April. Its currency for return product has not been setting the heather on fire over the last three years and has experienced a high level of redemptions.
