EU Commission more confident of gas following Azeri decision

Fri, 28th Jun 2013 08:14

BRUSSELS, June 28 (Reuters) - EU Energy CommissionerGuenther Oettinger welcomed the selection of the Trans AdriaticPipeline (TAP) to ship Azeri gas to the European Union onFriday, saying it would provide increased security of supply.

"We now have a new partner for gas, and I am confident thatwe will receive more gas in the future," Oettinger said in astatement.

"Whether the system consists of two gas pipelines - TANAPand TAP - or one single pipeline as earlier projects hadforeseen - does not make any difference in terms of energysecurity."

The consortium developing Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz gas fieldannounced on Friday it had chosen TAP, which links to the TANAProute across Turkey, to ship natural gas to the European Union.
