Australian defence minister asks Japan for help developing new subs

TOKYO, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Australian Defence Minister DavidJohnston requested Japanese help to develop a new fleet ofsubmarines during a meeting in Tokyo with his Japanesecounterpart Akinori Eto, a spokesman for the Japanese defenceministry said on Thursday.

"Johnston requested cooperation from Japan, and Eto saidJapan will consider ways in which we can help," Hirofumi Takedasaid. (Reporting by Tim Kelly; Editing by Pravin Char)
