FTSE 100 movers: Sports Direct leads rises

Thu, 03rd Jul 2014 15:22

Sports apparel retailer Sports Direct was also rising strongly after shareholders yesterday narrowly voted through a bonus scheme that will see founder Mike Ashley receive £200m in shares.Antofagasta was boosted by reports that the group is to cut jobs and costs as it combines its El Tesoro and Esperanza mines under a new company. A director from the board said in an interview with Bloomberg yesterday that the mines, located in the Centinela region of Chile, will come under one management from next week. Fresnillo and Anglo American were also putting in decent gains this afternoon. Weir Group was lifted by RBC Capital, which reiterated its 'buy' rating on the engineering giant. IAG was lifted by a decent set of monthly traffic statistics which showed an inrease of 59% in revenue passenger kilometres and a 4% rise in group premium traffic for June. Sector peer easyJet was also ascended into the top 10. Vodafone rose on the news it has taken a step further with its offer for Cobra Automotives after the company received approval from Consob, the Italian regulator. RSA Insurance climbed after it agreed to offload the Chinese arm of its Sun Alliance subsidiary for £71m cash to Swiss Re as it looks to streamline the business. RSA Chief Executive Stephen Hester said the board was evaluating further non-core disposals, some of which the company expects to sign off before the end of the year. Meanwhile, the oil sector tracked prices lower, with Shell and BP sat at the bottom of the pile, BG Group was hit by lower gas futures.
