FTSE 250 movers: Pets at Home out of the dog house; Hochschild up as silver flies

Fri, 31st Jul 2020 15:36

(Sharecast News) - London's second tier index finished the month on the back foot, weighed down by losses in the travel and leisure space after the Prime Minister announced that the planned easing of lockdown measures would be postponed.
The move to postpone that easing for two weeks followed spikes in the number of new infections in parts of northern England.

Against that backdrop, the FTSE 250 ended Friday's session 0.5% weaker at 16,932.65.

Shares of TUI AG, Carnival, easyJet and Go Ahead Group were at or near the bottom of the pile.

Stock in Russian gold miner Petropavlovsk was conspicuous among the top fallers, given that futures for the yellow metal added 1.17% to 1,989.8/oz. during the session.

So too was the fall in Cairn Energy with the rise in front-dated Brent futures more than offset by poor results out of US peer Chevron which were weighing on the entire European Oil&Gas sector.

Hochschild Mining on the other hand was higher, as September-dated silver futures outperformed again, surging by 3,69% to $24.23/oz..

Somewhat ironically, Pets at Home outperformed by a mile after announcing that its like-for-like revenues had bounced back 12% in the eight weeks ended 16 July as a result of "exceptional, brought forward demand" - as lockdown restrictions were eased.

Its shares hit a fresh record high at one point in the day but ended just below their prior 52-week highs.
