FTSE 100 movers: Antofagasta tumbles after disappointing production figures

Wed, 04th May 2011 13:51

Miner Antofagasta is leading the decline on Wednesday after reporting production figures that missed expectations. Group copper production for the first three months of the year came in at 129,800 tonnes, below forecasts of 158,800 tonnes, reflecting delays and lower-than-budgeted grades at two of its projects. Sector peer Xstrata is also under the risers despite a 3% increase in total consolidated coal production, compared with a year earlier.Meanwhile, fashion retailer Next is topping the risers after a strong first quarter, which saw sales increase more than expected. Total sales for the period excluding VAT were up by 5.2% from the same period the previous year, ahead of guidance given in March of between -0.5% and +2.5%. High street giant Marks & Spencer, supermarket Morrison and B&Q owner Kingfisher are all firmer.Oil giants Petrofac, Tullow Oil and BG are among the fallers on the back of retreating crude prices. Oil titan BP is also lower following the settlement of the dispute over Prudhoe Bay oil transit line leaks in 2006, after settling with the US Department of Justice.Insurance titan Legal & General said worldwide sales on an annualised premium equivalent (APE) basis in the first quarter rose 12% to £433m from £388m the year before, but shares fell as the figures were below market expectations, where the median forecast was £442m.Engineering solutions provider Weir Group said it expects full year pre-tax profit to be around £20m ahead of its previous expectations following a strong first quarter. However, that wasn't enough to please investors, causing the stock to fall into the red.---BCFTSE 100 - RisersNext (NXT) 2,337.00p +5.18%Marks & Spencer Group (MKS) 397.90p +3.51%BT Group (BT.A) 198.40p +2.11%Sage Group (SGE) 292.00p +1.85%Morrison (Wm) Supermarkets (MRW) 303.20p +1.78%AstraZeneca (AZN) 3,091.00p +0.95%ITV (ITV) 75.05p +0.87%Kingfisher (KGF) 272.80p +0.85%Reckitt Benckiser Group (RB.) 3,448.00p +0.85%Inmarsat (ISAT) 616.00p +0.82%FTSE 100 - FallersAntofagasta (ANTO) 1,231.00p -7.58%ARM Holdings (ARM) 572.00p -4.98%Fresnillo (FRES) 1,526.00p -4.51%Smiths Group (SMIN) 1,216.00p -3.18%Petrofac Ltd.
