Winners in times of economic turmoil

Monday, 8th February 2010 09:44 - by Boredmum

Well, what a couple of weeks I’ve had. It started with a leak in the bathroom ceiling, and then it progressed to a hole in the ceiling. We figured that although we would like a complete new bathroom suite, we weren’t ready at this time to go the whole way. We would make a start and just get the ceiling fixed in the first instance. Well, that was the plan until we (or rather ‘he’) started to remove just the top row of tiles. Of course, nothing ever goes according to plan…*smash*…that was the bath cracked! Oh well, a hole in the ceiling we could have suffered for a little while, but without a bath. That just wouldn’t do. So we now needed a new bathroom suite, tiles, ceiling, radiator, etc. Or more to the point, we needed a Joiner, Plasterer, Plumber, and Tiler. You see, I know people talk of the ‘recession’ and I know that many of these tradesmen may not have as much work as they would like. From a customer’s point of view, we seemed to be the lucky ones, and I believe it was borne of the current climate. Yes, these people were all recommended through friends and work colleagues, but you wouldn’t believe how fast they could all do the work. Not only that, the pricing was very competitive and the standard of work high. It did make me think - was I just lucky or has there been a shift in the stereotypical workman who looks at a job, shakes his head, tells you it’s going to be expensive and then he’s not sure when he can fit you in? Although I wouldn’t wish that work was thin on the ground for any of these tradesmen, it was a refreshing experience. Are you finding any ‘Winners’ caused by the economic turmoil?
