Alas-Smith - totally agree. I have a considerable holding both here and BP. No choice but to sit it out. In addition to other dividend paying shares I also hold positions in numerous funds.
Technology businesses are here to stay, they are shaping our future and will continue to do so. Tesla is often used as an example as to how overvalued tech stocks are and with Tesla I possibly agree. But nothing to date has convinced me that Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Google etc, etc will suddenly crash.
I invest in tech companies via the L&G Global Tech Index fund. It's low cost, well diversified and, in my opinion, a good way to invest in global tech businesses.
As an aside - whether we like it or not, technology is going to be with us for a very long time and I see no reason that the growth will not continue. In particular, companies involved in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) should do best. Tesla is at the forefront of battery power - yes the bloke, Musk is a lot of a knob - the storage of renewable energy for urban transport is the key for the next generation of electric vehicles.
Once batteries are able to be fully charged in 5 minutes OR uncharged cells can be removed and replaced with fully charged ones in service stations in 5 minutes, then and only then will there be appetite for electric vehicles to replace the internal combustion engine. The downside for them is that they are almost silent - the use of electric taxis was the main reason why I refused to return to Zermatt for my winter holidays. With climate change presenting deluges that cause flooding, I'll stick with a Land Rover.
You could do worse than consider NVIDIA as a holding, though, if you prefer to spread your investments Allianz Technology Trust has done very well in the past and no reason to challenge its performance in the future. Not advice, of course, simply the musings of a mug punter.
Your thoughts are sensible & plausible & I wholeheartedly agree. Permit me to add a thought or two in addition:
[a] I wish I had had he courage to chase the USA tech stock - I did not ! But their astronomical rise must collapse as the buying has no reflection upon their performances [best /worst example obviously is Tesla] - its a pure crowded buying hysteria and the musical chairs phenomena will eventually follow. It always does.
When one considers RDSB itself, at these prices , the dividend is generous in itself. Let's see how the pain of lowish oil & gas prices impact upon the budget needs of Saudi and Russia as examples.
Cheers
