Manyana, they have had lots of opportunities to vote for candidates who are outright or dog-whistle racists and they have chosen not to.
Compared to many countries, they are few.
Notwithstanding their murderous sectarian past, this is at least in part attributable to the presence and campaigning of Sinn Fein who have provided a voice for the “left behind” constituency and prevented their absorption into the xenophobic/racist constituency as has been the case with Le Pen, Salvini, Trump etc.
So, if you are the xenophobe/racist that you present as on this board (and perhaps you’re not), it is probable that you are as common as in other countries but your views have been denied the “snowball” effect that others have capitalised on. The irony (?) is that they are probably the “public” school-educated, City type like Farage who would purport to represent the interests of the dispossessed and most likely would not s**t on them if it was to their real benefit.
So, while we Irish have shown in the US that we are as racist as the next, at least for now I am proud that we have repelled any such politicians - regardless of the underlying reasons.
JODO,
Are you having a laugh? The place is full of them. Yes, Ireland might have an Indian origin homosexual for a taoiseach but that just shows the level of intelligence in the rest of the politicians. You just have to watch the online dealings from the Dail to know what a dozy bunch of layabouts they are.
Just because there is a silent majority too scared to raise their heads above the parapet does not mean they do not exist. Have you asked them or are you just "hoping"?
LW >>> "When Corona is finally in retreat and oil prices get back to somewhere nearer where they were when the talks began, prospects of a deal might seem brighter."
Corona is not the only cause of low oil prices. The Saudi-Russian spat is also to blame. We had a mini-spike a couple of days ago merely on news that there might be a rapprochement between the two. Turns out that was just a rumour spread by none other than Donald Trump shooting his mouth off, as usual with scant regard for facts.
Oil won't recover while OPEC+ is at loggerheads, and even then the coming recession seems likely to keep oil in the doldrums for some considerable time. The oil majors have already taken a scalpel (or more like a sledgehammer) to development budgets. I believe it is delusional to think Barryroe has a chance of being farmed out this side of 2022.
Well, Manyana, at least you know yourself.
Fortunately, there are fairly few like you in Ireland!
What fun.
ps200306 should have continued with the article from Business Post where it says "Sixteen licences in total have been surrendered. ". Since all licenses incur annual costs that must be quite a loss to the Irish economy. Thank you Brid Smith. I hope coronavirus is running up and down your back.
Does that make me racist as I cannpt be a snowflake as that only refers to "young people".
Everybody is racist when it boils down to it. You are either a positive racistor a negative racist.
My favourite racist is Shami Chackrabati. She is so far up her rear end she does not know if she is coming or going. A total hypocrite who opposes grammar schools but still sends her son to an expensive private school. Now she is a positive racist or the highest order. Others in that class include Jeremy Corbyn, his previous live-in lover Diane Abbott (another flaunting the school syndrome of saying one thing and doing another with her son). At least both women did England a favour and had only one child).
Why was it OK in the 1920s onward to call people who originated around the river Niger in Africa by a deriviation of the native origin but now it is totally "racist". Surely that is little different from calling me "Irish"? After all, Al Jolson made a fortune blackening his face and singing songs like "Mammie" but I never heard of him being called a racist.
So exactly what does "racist" mean? After all, if we are all racist of one kind or another what is the point of using the word to "name call".
Happy to sign myself off as a "racist" if it means I prefer my own country, creed and colour to anybody elses.
I know it's bad news, PS, but we already knew the trend from the fact that Total withdrew from Avalon and ENI delayed the survey of South Dunquin.
The fact that several companies have been in talks with PVR about Barryroe suggests there is still hope of a deal there, and I would suggest that the peculiarities of the Barryroe situation, often highlighted by Manyana, explain the interest of so many parties.
When Corona is finally in retreat and oil prices get back to somewhere nearer where they were when the talks began, prospects of a deal might seem brighter.
Thanks to the self obsessed spin doctor and his progressive friends. Well done.
I've been avoiding this board as it's too unsavory to visit, but FWIW this is from today's Business Post:
