Definition of 'Treasury'

Arm of Government responsible for all financial decisions and regulation of the financial services sector.

It is the responsibility of the Chancellor of the Exchequer and manages the collecting of taxes, government expenditure and national debt.

Until 1997, the Treasury was responsible for the overall management of the economy. The Bank of England is now independant, and shares management of the economy with the Treasury.
