Portfolio news - InSignals Neurotech secures grant funding to expand remote monitoring and launch Parkinson's app

Frontier IP, a specialist in commercialising intellectual property, today announces that portfolio company inSignals Neurotech ("inSignals" or "the Company") has been awarded a €317,762 grant, co-financed by the European Union under Portugal 2030 ("PT2030") framework through the NORTE 2030 programme.

InSignals is also launching a mobile app to support Parkinson's sufferers and caregivers to manage the disease more effectively. This work is being funded by a previous grant from PRR Green Vouchers. Frontier IP holds a 32.9 per cent equity stake in the Company.

The PT2030 framework is a European Union-backed structural programme to support Portugal's economic, social, and territorial development. It has a strong focus on innovation and digital technologies.

The funding will support a key strategic step for inSignals. It will use the grant to extend its proprietary algorithms to operate remotely through third-party wearable devices, including smartwatches and smart rings.

This development builds on the Company's clinically-validated technology and will enable continuous, real-world monitoring of Parkinson's disease outside clinical settings. By integrating with widely used consumer devices, inSignals aims to accelerate adoption, improve accessibility, and unlock scalable, data-driven care.

The approach also enables more responsive treatment optimisation, including integration with advanced therapies such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) and, potentially, infusion-based pharmacological treatments.

InSignals is currently undertaking a seed fundraising round to support the medical regulatory compliance and international expansion. The Company is engaging with investors who may benefit from Portugal's co-investment programmes and favourable innovation funding environment.

In parallel, inSignals is launching a mobile application designed specifically for people living with Parkinson's patients and their caregivers. The mobile app will enable ongoing symptom monitoring and improve communication with clinicians. This marks an important step in expanding the Company's offering beyond clinical tools into patient-facing digital health solutions.

InSignals' technology has been extensively validated and tested in more than 200 patients across an international multi-centre clinical study. As a pioneer in objective rigidity measurement, inSignals holds patents covering rigidity quantification methods.

The Company is a spin out from the Portuguese Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science ("INESC TEC") with the support of São João University Hospital, part of the University of Porto. It was established to commercialise the research of Professor João Paulo Cunha, Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and Senior Researcher at INESC TEC, where he founded the Biomedical Research and Innovation (BRAIN) group and co-founded the Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research.

InSignals has been recognised as one of Portugal's most promising health technology companies, including being highlighted by F6S as a leading HealthTech startup in 2025. Previously, the Company was selected as a "One to Watch" in the Nature Spin-Off Prize 2020 and continues to engage with potential industry partners while conducting multi-centre clinical studies in Portugal, the Netherlands, and Spain.

InSignals Neurotech Co-founder and CSO João Paulo Cunha said: "Our vision has always been to combine rigorous clinical science with accessible digital technologies that can transform the management of Parkinson's disease. This funding allows us to take a significant step towards that goal by bringing our proprietary algorithms beyond specialised clinical settings and into everyday wearable devices. It's especially rewarding to see people using our technology at home and finding it useful in their daily lives."

Frontier IP Chief Executive Officer Neil Crabb said: "InSignals' proprietary technology offers the potential to optimise the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's and other neurological diseases. The PT2030 grant and the launch of the mobile app are both exciting developments that validate the ground-breaking nature of the Company's technology."
