DDD signs development agreement with InterDigital

Los Angeles, California and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania: A wholly owned subsidiary of DDD Group plc (AIM: DDD; OTCQX: DDDGY), the 3D solutions company, has signed a development agreement with a wholly owned subsidiary of InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) for its next generation HD and UHD video processing technologies.

The one year development agreement involves the recently announced new inventions that use DDD's 3D image processing techniques to pre-process 2D video before it is encoded and streamed to the viewer. Testing of the new solution indicates that the pre-processing can save between 7% and 30% of the bitrate required to deliver the equivalent unprocessed video. This performance improvement has enabled full 1080 HD versions of content to be delivered where conventional encoding techniques reduce the picture quality to 720 HD resolution based on the available bandwidth. Alternatively, these bitrate savings allow a provider of streaming video to reduce their bandwidth costs without compromising the picture quality of their existing services.

Under the terms of the development agreement, DDD and InterDigital will collaborate to combine DDD's new image processing techniques with InterDigital's user adaptive video streaming technology to explore the feasibility of the combined solution for applications in streaming video to mobile devices and Smart TVs. Based on the results, both companies will then determine the most suitable deployment approach, which may include licensing the combined technologies to leading providers of streaming video content to consumers.
