As posted on the NSCAG website on 22 September. Should we believe Bezzell or Gustavo Porras?
Gustavo Porras, President of Nicaragua’s National Assembly, has issued a statement summarising the situation of those detained for offences carried out during the attempted coup in Nicaragua. The Government reports the following:-
204 people under arrest for crimes of terrorism or criminal violence detained in the prison system on the orders of the competent court.
187 are men: 181 indicted and awaiting criminal trial and 6 already sentenced by the courts but pending appeal
17 are women : 16 indicted and awaiting criminal trial and one already sentenced by the courts but pending appeal
All detainees have access to lawyers of their choice and if they cannot afford one the public office will assign a public defender) and all are being presented to court within the legal time framework.
In all cases, the prison system has guaranteed:
• Medical check-up on entry to the prison system
• Provision of bedding and prison uniform
• Basic medical care depending on the accused’s medical needs
• Fortnightly family visits of 3 continuous hours by up to 8 relatives per prisoner
• Conjugal visits every fortnight for 2 continuous hours
• Reception of food and articles of primary necessity once a week handed over by the prisoner’s family in the prison’s area of reception of packets
• open air activity twice a week in the prison’s recreation facility
• legal visits and court procedures in accordance with the criminal code.
The following represents the official Nicaraguan government position regarding the attempted coup as circulated to interested parties in the uk:
The violent Coup attempt did not succeed in Nicaragua, as the majority of the population decided to take a stand against the violence, put an end to the terror campaign, demand justice and firmly express their will to return the country the path of peace, socio-economic development and wellbeing. As such, the will of the people was supported by the government of Nicaragua and its institutions, who proceeded to clear the roadblocks, apprehend and prosecute the criminals and restored the law and order.
Currently, peace, safety, security and free movement have been restored. All hospitals, education institutions, banks, government offices and public services are under normal operations. 99% of all businesses from all sectors (including factories, supermarkets, petrol stations and SMEs) are open and operational. Public infrastructure and social projects have been recommenced and all industries are back in action to counteract the negative impact the Coup attempt had on the economy, particularly the tourism and services sectors.
A clear symptom of this return to peace and normality, was the docking in San Juan del Sur (our tourist mecca) of a large tourist cruise from the US this past Saturday, the impressive Crystal Symphony, with over 1,300 people on board.
The government has carried reconstruction works of all damaged infrastructure and recommenced all health, water sanitation and education projects that had been put on hold during the crisis. New projects are being launched every week to support SME’s and family owned businesses in all industries.
Haha, I like your sense of humour Sein. Just my opinion but you should be very glad that the evil-doers of the MRS, CIA etc. etc. didn't get their coup. If they had, then CNR would be at 2p. Maybe out of all this CNR did well because we now have the PC behind us.
I used the Share Centre to buy 1179 shares this morning and left them to set up the deal.
Over the weekend I watched a 1 hour long interview with Ortega. At one point he stated that the 'coup' has been categorically and irreversibly defeated. He also said 'they thought that we, the Sandinistas, were weak, but they were wrong as has been demonstrated'. So my conclusion is that the government will consolidate it's grip on power, that any concessions, such as changes to the electoral commission, will be minor and that the government will seek to make up lost ground by promoting income generating projects. The impact on CNR from the recent events could be to dampen enthusiasm and hold back the share price at least in the short term but I guess that there is nothing insurmountable preventing the construction of the mine apart from the minor issue of finding $120m to fund the construction.
There you go again. I'd just like to point out that Carmen Vallejos, who wrote that article, is a supporter of the MRS. And they are the very party that is at the centre of the coup plotters. I was more than a bit dismayed to see that the New internationalist of all organisations should want to be supporting that lot. On the other hand it's good to see the government getting more of a grip on things. Hope we can get back to CNR related issues ASAP.
Fidel, Daniel and Maduro seem are (or in Fidels case were) her least favourite characters.
Seingrid, you keep on and on about the amnesty report but have you bothered to look into the background of its author? Erika Guevara Rosas is a deeply flawed character whose reports are noteworthy for their partiality against left-of-centre governments.
I hope I don't say this too soon but little by little things are returning to normal in Nicaragua which should be helpful to Condor Gold and more importantly the Nicaraguan people, although of course not the delinquents, assassins and murderers who are now being arrested.
My guess is that the MM's had spare shares on their hands. At least the bid price increased. I expect there will be some upwards movement over the next few days as the implications of the PC being completed sink in.
Maradona says 'Daniel es mi presidente'. Soft coup over?
Glad the RNS went well. People attending seemed happy enough from what I saw on the Condor Gold facebook page. Had a small top up this morning on the back of the RNS (8916 + 8916).
Sein, I also remain unconvinced that Ortega is finished and I find it puzzling that Bez is so confident that he is finished. For months Daniel and Rosario have looked tired and miserable in every photo but the photos from his 'Cain and Abel' speech at the weekend show them both looking confident and relaxed. true - the catholic bishops, western media, Trump etc are out to get him but the opposition still don't have a coherent leadership or plan.
No, but nothing good from any other side either. My friends in Nicaragua are suffering extreme stress and there's not much I can say from here in the UK that would help. Perhaps MC can come up with an initiative that can bring the two sides together.
Sein Anything written by Tim Rogers under the Nicaragua Dispatch label should come with a health warning. i.e. 'probable CIA operative, read this article with caution'.
Well that may be true that many of those with access to the internet and ready to voice their opinion want Ortega out. But it's equally true that Ortega is not a quitter so IMO he might agree to changes in the way the CSE is made up but not to bringing forward the next elections.
Some of my Nica friends in Nicaragua as well as some of those here in the UK think that Daniel has to go. But to judge by this recent police report that would mean handing over to the worst criminal elements. I've had to close my education centre in Leon because my staff can't get to work safely (I'm in the UK but my staff are all in Nicaragua). PRESS RELEASE No. 56 - 2018 The National Police makes the people of Nicaragua aware of terrorist acts and organized crime, committed by criminal groups, with firearms, mortars and Molotov cocktails, which altered the public order, peace and tranquillity of individuals, families and communities , on Monday 11 and the first hours of today Tuesday, June 12, 2018. Hi Halle, I'm very well aware and that's why I mentioned the source. the full article which you can find on the Tortilla Con Sal blog does give a reasoned if biased explanation of what is going on. Basically the article goes on to say that it is a US inspired and US funded 'soft' coup and that the Nicaraguan government is allowing the violent protests, roadblocks and intimidation to continue and that sooner or later the populace will turn against the protests. What worries me is that if as MC implies that Daniel and Co are toast and Felix Maridiaga (AKA the humanitarian) is installed as president that the new government will be much less pro-mining than the existing one. I can see that both daniel and rosario look tired but if agreement is reached with the OAS to bring forward the elections with a new presidential candidate for the FSLN then conceivably the Sandinistas could still win a majority. And that Halle might be the best thing for both Condor Gold and for the poor of Nicaragua.
From Tortilla Con sal on 11th June (TeleSur article) Nicaragua has been a good example of how Western corporate and alternative news media are able to create a custom-made bizarro-world to suit the propaganda requirements of their countries’ elites. The current media onslaught against Nicaragua uses the whole toolbox of propaganda tricks portraying aggressors as victims, reporting non-existent massacres of peacefully protesting students, denying systematic destruction by opposition paramilitaries of public property and private businesses, even omitting attacks on hospitals and ambulances. The big fundamental fiction has been that a majority of people in Nicaragua reject the Sandinista government led by President Daniel Ortega. The converse of the lie is that most people support the so-called Civic Alliance composed of right-wing business leaders, right-wing political parties, reactionary Catholic bishops, US-funded NGOs and university students allied to those interests.
