What was notable about the G7 statement was it was the first time the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan had been able to reach a consensus on foreign policy with Mr Trump.

If what Macron has just said about Trump is true, then Putin has shot himself in the foot. Somebody said last August in Alaska that Putin might overreach himself with maximalist demands. How true! He is losing now - and fast!

Trump likes to back winners, and if he can be convinced that Ukraine is now starting to slowly win back territory, then he might be persuaded to fully back Ukraine over Russia.

In a statement released by the Elysée, the G7 said: “We commend Ukraine for its resilience and progress on the battlefield in recent months and emphasise there is now a new momentum.

“To support and accelerate this new momentum, we agree to increase the delivery of air defence capacities, additional systems and interceptors, and long-range capabilities.”

The G7 also said they would consider allowing Ukraine to produce domestic versions of Western air defence systems by extending licences, following a plea by Volodymyr Zelensky for Kyiv to be allowed to make Patriot missiles.
