The future of Bangladesh's coal resources will be determined based on the decision made at the highest level after analyzing the proposal. If approval for coal extraction is obtained at this stage, it will be possible to start mining and extract coal within the next three years.

Preparations of the Energy Department

Of the five coal mines discovered in Bangladesh, only Barapukuria is used for coal extraction. Coal has been extracted there on a commercial basis since 2005 through underground mining. The Barapukuria coal mine has reserves of 410 million tons of coal. Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) has no approved plans for coal extraction after 2027.

Bangladesh is preparing to extract its own coal to reduce energy crisis and import dependency in the future, where there are also plans to extract coal in the open-pit method. The proposal that the Ministry of Energy is going to make for the government's high-level decision will be the final decision in the initial stage, which will be the extraction of coal from three mines in the country.

Five coal mines have been discovered so far in the northern part of Bangladesh. These mines have reserves of 7,823 million tons of coal. According to the presentation of the Energy Department, twenty percent of this coal is extractable, which is 1,564.6 million tons. This amount of coal is capable of meeting the energy demand equivalent to 40.6 trillion cubic feet of gas.

BBC Bangla has learned from the Ministry of Energy that a proposal prepared based on the information of various surveys and feasibility studies conducted in the country's coal mines will be presented to the Prime Minister by next April and approval will be sought.
