Or the £279,000 in earnings, donations, and hospitality that MPs opposing tougher gambling regulations have received from the industry in the last 5 years

The regulated sector currently contributes £6.8 billion to the UK economy, supports more than 109,000 jobs and pays £4 billion in taxes each year. Industry figures argue that the planned tax hikes risk weakening one of the country’s most internationally competitive digital sectors at a time when illegal operators are growing rapidly.

The BGC is urging HM Treasury to reopen dialogue with the industry and reassess the tax framework before its introduction. The Council argues that without changes, the reforms could cause long-term harm to the broader UK gambling ecosystem and undermine the stated fiscal goals.

I would imagine in the January update we will be informed they have found substantial cost savings through clever accounting and disposal of loss making areas within the group .

The Chancellor will protect the industry from a broader raid on betting, with plans being worked up to increase taxes on slot machines in bookmakers’ shops and online gaming.

Bets placed in-person at the races have, in effect, no duty but those placed on the horses in betting shops or online are subject to a levy. Neither is expected to be raised in the Budget.
