regional service provider based in Hanover, Germany has selected the SmartWall® Threat Defense System (TDS) from the leading supplier of real-time DDoS attack mitigation technology, Corero Network Security (LSE: CNS). Across the industry, increasing numbers of enterprise customers are demanding more proactive and sophisticated DDoS protection from their Internet Providers in response to evolving attack techniques. In order to address this demand, htp GmbH has implemented automatic DDoS protection technology from Corero, which has been deemed “unparalleled.“
htp sought the Corero solution to mitigate against the DDoS attacks they were experiencing almost daily. The company had previously used static filters to defend against attacks, which allowed a successful attack to keep one of the carrier’s central systems unavailable for an extended period of time.
Robert Remenyi, responsible for planning the internet backbone for htp GmbH, explained how the Corero TDS has allowed them to identify smaller, sub-saturating DDoS attacks on the company’s network. “Around two years ago, we started to examine the peaks of our bandwidth spikes. With FlowAccounting, we have the ability to analyze conspicuous swings, confirming our suspicions. These spikes in bandwidth utilization have actually been DDoS attacks, and they were generally UDP (user datagram protocol) amplification attacks.”
In order to ensure that the solution could be implemented in the desired manner, a proof of concept process was put in place. Three vendors were selected to participate in this decisive phase.
According to Robert Remenyi, “Our objective was to maintain system and service availability in the face of a DDoS attack with the assistance of the new technology. The system should impact htp’s networking processes as little as possible and above all, we didn’t want to have to keep implementing changes along the way. Today, with the Corero SmartWall TDS solution deployed in-line, we are protecting all transit connections and thereby the entire infrastructure behind it in a very convenient way. The solution is
