Buybacks?....what does BHP do? BHP Billiton - buyback and special dividend announced to shareholders. The move comes after the sale of BHP's onshore oil and gas assets to BP in July. $5.2bn of the proceeds will be used on a share buyback scheme. The other half of the cash will be paid out via a special dividend in January 2019. That will bring the total cash returned to shareholders to US$21bn over the last two years.
