about production versus sale is an interesting one and clearly divides people. My guess would be, the older the poster, the more likely that person is to want a sale.
However, those arguing for the production route should bear in mind it's not just about raising the odd $3bn, as if that weren't challenging enough. To go down this route requires a vast corporate infrastructure and in-house experience, and this is not easily acquired...at least not the acquisition of top talent.
Mining, like most industries and businesses nowadays, is dominated by huge global players (grandmothers...eggs, etc) It is hugely difficult for a company to go from scratch and turn itself into a fully-fledged global competitor. In fact, I'm struggling to think of a recent example.
As far as our structure and management profiles are concerned, I can see no real indication that we'll be an independent business within two years, let alone thirty.
As others have said, NM is playing a canny game of keeping all options open, but I'd be extremely surprised if there's a single person sitting around the board tables of BHP etc, etc, who genuinely believes that SOLG will still be around in the relatively near future.
