Vodafone to work with Amazon on AWS Wavelength project

Wed, 04th Dec 2019 08:30

(Sharecast News) - Telecommunications giant Vodafone announced on Wednesday that it will collaborate with Amazon Web Services to make AWS Wavelength available across Europe.
Vodafone said the new collaboration, reached between its Vodafone Business arm and the Amazon.com division, would allow developers to build applications on the AWS API, and run them from the 5G network node closest to their end-users.

For example, it said workers would be able to use augmented reality devices to help them diagnose and repair complex equipment in the field, while the likes of gamers would experience more responsive high definition experiences on mobile devices.

AWS Wavelength embeds AWS compute and storage services at the edge of telecommunications providers' 5G networks, Vodafone explained, enabling developers to serve use cases that require ultra-low latency.

Chief executive of Vodafone Business, Vinod Kumar, said: "With Europe's largest 5G network across 58 cities and as a global leader in IoT with over 90 million connections, Vodafone is pleased to be the first telco to introduce AWS Wavelength in Europe."

"Faster speeds and lower latencies have the potential to revolutionise how our customers do business, and they can rely on Vodafone's existing capabilities and security layers within our own network."

As of 0830 GMT, Vodafone shares were down 1.19% at 144.06p.
