UPDATE: Carnival Extends Pause For Some Holland America Lines

Tue, 11th Aug 2020 18:43

(Alliance News) - Carnival PLC said Tuesday part of its suspended Holland America Line operations will see its pause extended to December 15.

The pause extension affects Caribbean, Mexico, Panama Canal, Pacific Coastal, South America, Antarctica, Hawaii, South Pacific, Australia and Asia itineraries, Carnival said.

The FTSE 250-listed cruise line operator said guests on these cruises will receive a bonus future cruise credit.

Carnival has previously cancelled Holland America Line global cruise operations in Alaska, Europe and Canada-New England for 2020.

Shares in Carnival closed 6.4% higher in London on Tuesday at 1,031.00 pence each.

Earlier Tuesday, Carnival said its subsidiary Seabourn will cancel upcoming voyages for three cruise ships in its fleet as a part of its pause in global ship operations.

The announcement applies to Seabourn Encore, Seabourn Ovation, and Seabourn Sojourn with operations pause effective through November 25, December 20 and May 24, 2021, respectively.

The brand had previously announced a pause in its global ship operations from March 14 to November 20, effectively cancelling all voyages scheduled to operate during that timeframe.

The decision to cancel additional voyages is an action to deal with the circumstances continuing to evolve from the global response to the Covid-19 situation, Carnival explained.

"We've been saying for some time that our resumption of service will come gradually, and this action reflects that discussion. The health, safety and well-being of our guests, crew and the people in destinations we visit remain a top priority," said Josh Leibowitz, president of Seabourn.

"Like many who watch the travel industry, we are encouraged by the signs emerging around the world that point to travel's progress toward return. When our expert science and medical advisors and our destinations support the ability to resume travel on Seabourn, we'll be ready," added Leibowitz.

In addition, Carnival said its other subsidiary P&O Cruises has extended its pause in operations until November 12 and also cancelled two long itineraries due to depart in January 2021.

"As well as cancelling all cruises up until November 12, we will, sadly, also be cancelling Aurora's Caribbean and South America Adventure and Arcadia's World Cruise. Given long-term planning, combined with the complexity and length of these long-haul itineraries and evolving border restrictions, we need to ensure that we adhere to the guidance as it stands," said P&O Cruises President Paul Ludlow.

More positively, Costa Cruises, also a part of Carnival, is planning to restart its operations from Italian ports gradually on September 6.

The move follows the approval on Monday by the Italian government of the resumption of cruises and the new health protocol. The return to cruising will be progressive, involving an increasing number of ships, Carnival noted. The first ship to set sail will be Costa Deliziosa, on September 6, offering weekly cruises from Trieste to discover the most beautiful destinations in Greece.
