FTSE 100 movers: Miners lifted by data, RyanAir on the warpath

Mon, 04th Nov 2013 15:00

Mining stocks were on the rise, buoyed by the upbeat outlook for top metals consumer China. Fresnillo, Antofagasta, Rio Tinto, Anglo American, Vedanta and BHP Billiton were among the best performers.Activity in China's services sector in October expanded at its fastest pace in the last year, reinforcing confidence that the world's largest economy is on a stable growth path.HSBC also jumped after saying that underlying profit before tax totalled $5.06bn in the three months to September 30th, up 10% from $4.6bn the year before and ahead of forecasts. Underlying revenues were broadly unchanged at $15.6bn but still better than analysts' estimates.Meanwhile, shares in Weir Group plunged after the engineering firm cut its full-year profit outlook due to the impact of the recent weakness in the US and Australian dollar. Numis reacted by downgrading its rating on the stock to 'add' this morning.Easyjet shares were hit by a surprise profit warning from Ryanair, which said that full-year profits will fall for the first time in five years as airfares drop in Europe due to fierce competition. Analysts at Goodbody on Monday flagged indications that RyanAir is looking to up the ante in its rivalry with easyJet, the FT Alphaville was pointing out. G4S shares were also lower after it was announced the UK's Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has launched an investigation into the company over claims they overcharged the government on contracts for tagging criminals. An audit suggested the firms had been charging for tagging criminals who were either dead, in jail or never tagged in the first place.
