FTSE 100 movers: Lloyds leads the risers

Tue, 28th Jan 2014 14:46

Leading the upside was Lloyds Banking Group as the company announced progress with its plan to put it back on track for profitability. In line with a UK government objective of returning the bank to private ownership, it unveiled another round of planned job cuts. Water group Severn Trent continued to rise on takeover speculation after rumours yesterday of a possible private equity bid out of Canada.Fund manager Aberdeen climbed as the stock recovered after bearing the brunt of the wider market sell-off in recent days due to its exposure to the emerging markets.RBS rebounded after sinking late yesterday as it detailed nearly £3bn of provisions for new claims. The stock was upgraded this morning by Investec from 'sell' to 'hold'. Analysts may be reacting positively to the fact that the lender largely brought forward charges expected for 2014 and beyond. The same may also act as a catalyst for speeding up the IPO of its US arm Citizens'. Meanwhile, chip designer ARM Holdings saw its share price drop after an IDC report showed that although global smartphone shipments rose 38%, growth was driven by lower-margin cheap devices.Mining group Fresnillo posted a quarterly decline in silver production, which fell 2.3% per cent year-on-year due to lower ore grade at the Fresnillo and Ciénega mines. Quarterly attributable silver production decreased 7.9% when compared to the previous quarter, it said. Sector peer Randgold Resources also fell, tracking the price of precious metals lower throughout the session. Oil and gas firm BG Group was in the red again after sinking sharply yesterday on disappointing production guidance for 2014 and 2015. Analysts across the board trimmed their target prices for the stock today, with JPMorgan notably downgrading the shares to 'neutral'.FTSE 100 - RisersLloyds Banking Group (LLOY) 82.87p +3.07%Severn Trent (SVT) 1,752.00p +3.06%Aberdeen Asset Management (ADN) 402.70p +2.91%Hargreaves Lansdown (HL.) 1,470.00p +2.87%Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) 340.40p +2.47%Johnson Matthey (JMAT) 3,323.00p +2.44%CRH (CRH) 1,600.00p +2.43%Royal Mail (RMG) 572.50p +2.42%Persimmon (PSN) 1,280.00p +2.40%Shire Plc (SHP) 3,014.00p +2.31%FTSE 100 - FallersARM Holdings (ARM) 938.50p -1.98%Imperial Tobacco Group (IMT) 2,220.00p -1.42%Tullow Oil (TLW) 831.50p -1.42%BG Group (BG.) 1,068.50p -1.25%G4S (GFS) 246.80p -1.24%Randgold Resources Ltd.
