FTSE 100 movers: GSK rises on COPD treatment approval

Shares in pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline gained after the the US FDA approved Breo Ellipta, the company's treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). "This positive recommendation is a crucial first step towards making Breo Ellipta available for appropriate COPD patients across the US," it said. Another strong riser was telecoms giant Vodafone. The group has had a strong few days, launching its M-Pesa technology in India and announcing the expansion of its Vodafone Red customer proposition to cover a total of 14 European markets, along with new additional customer options. Engineering firm GKN was in demand after saying that it acquisition of Volvo Aero last year helped boost sales by 9.0% in the first quarter of 2013. Tullow Oil was also high riser after Societe Generale upgraded the stock from 'hold' to 'buy', saying that recent investor uncertainty over its exploration-led strategy has created a buying opportunity. Drinks giant SABMiller rose on the back of a 3.0% increase in organic lager volumes in the year to March 31st. Global mining giant EVRAZ climbed after it reported that production volumes of steel, coking coal, iron ore and vanadium all increased during the first three months of the year.Meanwhile, heading the other way was mining giant ENRC, which slumped on the back of reports that the Serious Fraud Office is looking into corporate governance issues at the firm. DIY retailer Kingfisher was subdued despite saying that it has acquired 15 'Brincostore' retail outlets in Romania from a French retail company for an undisclosed sum. Also in the red was Barclays, which said its investment banking boss Rich Ricci will this month retire from the UK bank. His departure ends months of speculation that he would be ousted by new Chief Executive Antony Jenkins as part of a clampdown on executive pay.
