BP plans green hydrogen production facility in north east England

Mon, 29th Nov 2021 09:38

(Alliance News) - BP PLC on Monday announced plans for a green hydrogen production facility in Teesside, England with first production being targeted in 2025.

The energy firm said that the project could deliver up to 500 megawatts electrical input of hydrogen production ‎by 2030, with an initial ‎phase of some 60MWe of installed hydrogen production capacity.

Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced by a process that does not emit any greenhouse gases, and which can be transformed into electricity or synthetic gas and used for domestic, commercial, industrial or mobility purposes.

"Low carbon ‎hydrogen will be essential in decarbonizing hard-to-abate industrial sectors including heavy transport," Louise Jacobsen Plutt, bp's senior vice president for hydrogen, said.

A final investment decision on the ‎project is expected in 2023, the company said.

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: "This exciting project builds on our ongoing development of ‎hydrogen in the area through the Tees Valley Hydrogen Transport Hub. It'll help pave the way for its ‎use across all transport modes, creating high-quality, green jobs in the process.‎"

BP has already announced a series of memoranda of understanding with potential industrial ‎customers for hydrogen in the Teesside area, including both existing and planned operations.

BP shares were up 2.1% to 324.25 pence each in London on Monday morning.
