AIM-listed Oracle Power to develop large green hydrogen & ammonia plant in Pakistan with thyssenkrup

AIM-listed Oracle Power (ORCP) have appointed thyssenkrup Uhde to lead a technical and commercial feasibility study for the first large green hydrogen and ammonia project of scale in Pakistan. Thyssenkrup are leading experts in making green hydrogen, the subsequent conversion to green ammonia then back to hydrogen after transportation.

London South East spoke to Oracle Energy CEO Naheed Memon from Karachi about the project, and she said Pakistan was very well suited to making green hydrogen on a large scale because it has access to cheap renewable power (both wind and solar power are required) and 70/80 per cent of the cost of green hydrogen is renewable power.

A large site is needed for the $1.5bn to $2bn dollar project and this will be located in Sindh province, in the Sindh wind corridor. "Plus, we need to be close to a port. Putting these elements together Pakistan is a strategically good place place to be".

"We are super-glad to have thyssenkrupp with us because it's not easy to get them on board. They are very much sought after and to quote their CEO who I just met recently 'we get thousands of applications and have thousands of projects sitting in our pipeline but end up turning most of them down because we don't have the bandwidth to tackle all of them. We only look at players and producers who are of a reasonable quantum. Only large players will be competitive in this universe. So, we are large enough to attract them and they see the opportunity to put this together in Pakistan."
