Wall Street Breakfast: Brexit Tensions Resurface
23 July 2021
The Brexit drama is far from over, with the U.K. and EU on a collision course over the rules for Northern Ireland. It was only seven months ago that the two sides came to an agreement on a Brexit deal, but Britain now wants to overhaul the trading system for the territory. The special arrangement was previously inked to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland and prevent a backdoor for smuggling into the bloc, but the protocol has subsequently resulted in a fractious relationship.
Why is it still an issue? Northern Ireland's status is somewhat of a hybrid as it is still part of the United Kingdom, as well as the European Single Market. That means checks need to be done on goods that are traveling from Great Britain to Northern Ireland to block items from leaking into the EU. Most of the checks are carried out on the Irish sea border, which has caused tensions among the pro-U.K. unionist community in Northern Ireland, which doesn't like the idea of a barrier with the mainland.
U.K. Brexit Minister David Frost now sees the situation as untenable and has proposed a plan to substantially rewrite the Northern Ireland protocol. The deal would largely be based on a light-touch regime and the honesty of traders, whereby businesses would register their transactions and agree to inspections of their supply chains. Meanwhile, a deadline is looming at the end of September, when a series of so-called grace periods come to an end and the full weight of checks are supposed to be applied across Irish sea traffic.
Going further: Frost wants to extend the waiver periods indefinitely, and if the EU doesn't put the current arrangements on hold, he's holding back the option of overriding the entire treaty unilaterally. If that would happen, the EU would likely retaliate with tariffs and sanctions, while the relationship would deteriorate even further. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU will be "creative and flexible," but has ruled out renegotiation.

Boris is so desperate for EU Cash!
The UK government is telling councils to display EU flags across towns and cities in England as a condition for receiving high street Covid recovery cash.Guidance issued to local authorities by the communities ministry this summer says the blue and yellow symbol of European unity is "required" to be displayed around "every piece of signage, pavement sticker, or temporary public realm adaption" funded under the scheme.
The requirement, which will see thousands of new EU flags posted on official buildings and in public places across the country, exists because the European Regional Development Fund has given money to the UK to help with the Covid-19 reopening.
Despite Brexit having happened, under the withdrawal agreement the UK is still eligible for certain payments from the fund until the end of 2023 – but with strings attached.
The flag rule, imposed from Brussels but enforced from Whitehall, is embarrassing for ministers because they are keen to rid UK public buildings of EU flags, but do not want to turn down the Covid recovery cash. However, planning regulations introduced in England in 2007 to allow the EU flag to be flown on public buildings without planning permission will be removed following Brexit.

Loyalist activist Jamie Bryson has urged Boris Johnson's Government to "plunge the knife" into Northern Ireland protocol amid anger from Northern Irish unionists and Brexit supporters across the United Kingdom. Mr Bryson said that while UK Government had "drawn their sword and sharpened the blade" in negotiations with Brussels it was time for Britain to act unilaterally to end the "constitutional absurdity" of the Brexit Protocol.
Bryson told Express.co.uk: "I think the British Government have drawn their sword and sharpened the blade but sadly they haven't plunged it into the heart of the protocol yet.
"So I mean it is a nice start but it is almost like a drunk man taking his coat off in a fight outside a bar, I mean he is taking one step forward and two steps back shouting somebody hold me back!
"I mean at some point it is going to have to be put up or shut up.
"I do think we are coming very close to that period of time," he added. "
Sounds about right..... How much longer do you think we can blame it on Brexit ??
The truth always outs in the end. Not for the faint hearted, if only we could turn the bl00dy tv off. oh wait :)! They are proper k00b heads!!!!!!!!

It was Boris with his lies who brought about Brexit and its detrimental effects on all UK Farming ,fishing, ftse companies and other businesses, ie costs , profits, dividend's , even our basic freedom's which are being systematically restricted .
Then of course there are the increasingly empty shelves that will face the public, all unnecessary and brought about by lies, deceit and gullibility!
European stocks ticked up on Friday morning even as data showed UK economic growth slowed in July despite the ease of lockdown restrictions and the economy opening up.

The thing is... the same dumb asses who vote these people in will never admit an act of stupidity. Same with brexit, they'll start fighting in the streets and stealing each others food before they understand what a supply chain is and how its effected by leaving a board of 28 & how things don't always go your own way.
Mean while our politicians argue in parliament like kids taking punts at each other in the playground.
The UK is on a very detrimental path and has been for a while and slowly slowly people are starting to realise what leaving the biggest bloody trading union and having a true English stiff upper lip really means.
Long live boris and long live bu**s*it brexit.. to the holy grail of freedom (that doesn't exist).
What a **** up.
Many good developments in history spawn out of misery. There is hope.. but its going to get darker yet.
Just keep smiling.

Wondering if everyone else is keen to give away our freedoms and liberties to people you cannot trust?
I'm not at all. Sounds like a foolish move to me. but who am i to judge, maybe they've changed.
Strangely it seems like I'm outnumbered.

It makes you wonder how any lower, middle and even upper class voters who vote Tory get their self importance from to believe that those in the toff bum boys club give two hoots about them.
You know the ones, the taxi drivers, the football supporters, the doctors, nurses, teachers. (EVERYONE)
Triply baffles my brain.
Wake up people you’re living in a delusion of self importance.
That said many voted brexit so probably a few planks short of a bonfire.

Once you've established that it's not the zombie apocalypse & being overplayed by governments and the media you start to ask more questions...
Two of such questions might be...
Why the Tories (for the first time in history) care about the most venerable in society ?
Why they happy to destroy the **seemingly** healthy economy ?
(first form of defence is???)
You would be excused for believing this was a power grab and repositioning move on a broken economy with some collateral damage to boot!

Johnson just said that "the current stresses and strains are mainly a function of growth and economic revival".
So if you find yourself queueing at a petrol station, unable to heat your home, or looking at empty shelves, assure yourself it's because we are doing so marvellously.
