PRESS: Union Rejects Royal Mail's "Stunt" Strike Offer - Reuters

Mon, 04th Nov 2019 15:43

(Alliance News) - The main union at Royal Mail PLC has rejected an offer aimed at avoiding a strike that could affect mail deliveries ahead of a general election in December, Reuters reported on Monday.

The news agency said Royal Mail told the Communications Workers Union that if it removed the threat of strike action for the rest of 2019, the company would enter talks without preconditions.

However, the union's General Secretary Dave Ward called Royal Mail's offer a "stunt" which the union would not fall for, Reuters reported.

The union last month voted by 97% in favour of a nationwide strike, saying the company had failed to adhere to a pension deal agreed last year.

An early general election is set for December 12 after Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson could not get his deal for UK to leave the EU through parliament by a deadline of Thursday last week.

Royal Mail shares were trading 1.7% higher in London on Monday at 220.20 pence each.
