Baghdad (Alliance News) - Gunmen attacked the convoy of Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq and lawmaker Talal al-Soabi on Friday in western Baghdad, but they escaped unhurt, police said.
Their convoy was attacked by unknown gunmen in the area of Abu Gharib, in an ongoing surge of violence ahead of the April 30 general elections. Four bodyguards were wounded.
The next parliament is to elect the prime minister and president.
Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is seeking a third term as his Shiite-led government faces increasing opposition from Sunni-dominated provinces.
Iraq has seen almost daily attacks mainly targeting security forces and Shiite civilians.
According to UN estimates, 8,868 people were killed in violence in 2013, Iraq's highest annual death toll in five years.
