FTSE 100 Movers: GKN drops after profits rise just 1%

Wed, 19th Oct 2011 14:18

GKN was the biggest loser on the FTSE after announcing a pre-tax profit rise of just 1% in the third quarter. After accounting for the final charge of £11m relating to its plant closure in the US, the automotive, aerospace and land systems engineer revealed that pre-tax profit was £89m in the three months ended 30 September, up just £1m from £88m the year before.Investec's belief that the market would "take comfort" in the group's latest 'in line' update wasn't enough to shift it from the bottom spot. Satellite broadcaster, landline and broadband supplier BSkyB was the day's biggest riser after reporting a strong rise in profits in the quarter to 30 September as it increased sales of all three products.Revenue rose to £1.66bn from £1.53bn over the same period the previous year, while earnings per share grew by 20% to 11.6p. Evolution Securities said that the group's results "highlight the reason investors should own the stock". Drinks group Diageo was doing much better after announcing sales growth of 9% in the three months to 30 September. The company does however admit that some of the performance can be attributed to one off comparisons with the previous year which are unlikely to reoccur and Nomura maintains neutral stance and 1,320p target. Continuing talks over the extension of the European Financial Stability Fund is boosting banks, with Barclays, RBS and Lloyds all posting good gains.
