BP Says Whiting Refinery Blaze "Minimally" Effects Production

Thu, 28th Aug 2014 11:21

LONDON (Alliance News) - BP International Ltd said Thursday that its refinery operations at its refinery in Whiting, Indiana were "minimally" impacted by a fire on Wednesday evening.

The Whiting, Indiana refinery experienced "an operational incident on a process unit" at the north end of the complex at approximately 21:00 local time (03:00 BST) according to a spokesperson.

BP said that refinery operations were minimally impacted as a result of the incident and the refinery "continues to produce products for customers."

The Whiting Refinery is a multi-billion dollar oil refinery, which the company says is at the heart of BP's fuel strategy for years to come. The Whiting Refinery Modernisation Project saw the completion of commissioning of refinery units in December 2013, with all the major new units associated with the project successfully brought onstream.

"The refinery?s in-house fire department responded to the incident and the fire was extinguished at 10:55 pm," said BP in a statement.

One refinery employee was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, but was later released, it said.

BP shares were trading down 0.56% at 482.70 pence thursday afternoon.
