AFC Energy up after launching new ammonia cracker technology platform

Thu, 23rd Mar 2023 10:44

(Alliance News) - AFC Energy PLC on Thursday announced the launch of its new advanced ammonia cracker technology platform, a hydrogen generation solution that aims to "unlock the value" of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier fuel.

AFC Energy is a provider of hydrogen power generation technologies. It is based in Surrey, England. Shares in the firm were up 5.1% at 21.03 pence on Thursday morning in London.

AFC Energy's new modular, scalable ammonia cracker technology will support the decentralized generation of low-cost hydrogen, the company explained, enabling it to use fuel-cell technology in regions lacking hydrogen storage and transport.

The cracker also will create new commercial opportunities as a stand-alone product capable for stationary, modular hydrogen generation across the global hydrogen value chain, AFC Energy added.

The launch follows extensive cracker reactor validation testing over the past two years, which were completed in March at the company's UK test facilities.

Larger modular cracker system prototypes are expected within twelve months, and initial commercial deployments expected during 2025.

AFC Energy said its ammonia cracker is complementary to its existing fuel-cell platform and supports fuel-cell system saleability in markets where hydrogen supply logistics can be challenging.

AFC Energy noted it is seeing interest from European utilities, green and blue ammonia producers, ship owners, and heavy plant and equipment manufacturers. It is exploring near-term commercial partnerships.

Chief Executive Adam Bond said: "Clean ammonia is a preferred means of transporting hydrogen to end users, particularly in Europe and Asia, and with today's technology launch, AFC Energy is targeting these key markets to enable a faster, more widespread adoption of hydrogen where storage and transportation challenges might otherwise present short-term challenges."
