My friend is an area manager for cineworld, we had a chR about potential disney takeover, and when I said what a great idea it would be to have a disney store inside each cineworld, he said that they had already tried it in a few of their cinemas, a while ago.
I've tried to confirm on Google but can't find anything so maybe he was mistaken.
Don't think Disney have ever attempted to sell merchandise from multiplex's. Maybe your friend is getting confused by the main street cinema in Disneyland but thats a different situation and the upset came fron park fans who didn't want to see an original attraction change into a retail location.

Rumour has it the houses of parlaiment are going to be renamed Disney World.
Assuming he means stores in Cinemas rather than owning the cinema itself?
PrayFor, how can Disney have tried this before if the law wouldn't allow them to buy Cinemas?
Saiihaj,
I already talked to my cineworld mate about this , apparently disney tried it before and it cant have worked out. I think you're right though, if they arent paying any rent, a disney store in each cinema makes perfect sense. Usually families take their kids to the cinema as a treat, may as well finish the experience off by buying a £40 Woody Teddy bear.
Its great to think about, but I reckon all studios are just gonna watch from afar for the foreseeable future.
There is currently nothing good to look forward to in the short term, yet there is a massive problem with covid and the December covenant test (if its not sorted before then).
I'm still holding, but I agree with others, this could end up fluctuating between 30p-60p for a long time. Hopefully I'm wrong, it would be great to bag some cash before Xmas.
@guitarman - I’m sure newbies can differentiate between discussions about the possibilities of a takeover and the reasoning behind compared to an actual takeover... stating the obvious there... but yeh NEX is looking good!
@Guitarman - it’s a possibility that can’t be ignored by Disney, who knows that Mooky and the Disney Execs are already talking about it... let’s see how the cards play out. I see your on NEX chat as well, I’m thinking of investing there this week.
Just got back from Westfield shopping centre, my little lad saw the Disney shop from a distance and off we headed in that direction. We had to queue up to get in as it was busy however while the lad was filling up the trolley with his Disney goods all I was thinking about was how these Disney shops will sit perfectly across all of CINE... kids watch a movie and after it finishes see the same character merchandise sitting in-house, which parent will say no, the conversion rate will be very high, at the premium prices that these toys sell for they’ll make a killing... it all makes so much business sense for a takeover.
Not to mention the perfect place to offer discounts to go Disney land for example subscribe to unlimited movies and get a percentage off your Disney land/hotels package.
Another example is to have life size movie characters at the cinemas to promote the movies, it all adds to the fun for the big segment of the movie business for the kids.
The possibilities are amazing... my final bill at the Disney shop was next level but hey, great to see big smile on the lads cheeky face!
