SEV US CorpΒ Β to developΒ jointly withΒ AM General,Β aΒ prototypeΒ electric postal delivery vehicle forΒ the US Postal Service

SEV US CorpΒ customersΒ win additionalΒ $4.5mΒ Federal grant fundingΒ for 65 Smith trucksΒ through the Clean City Program

Strong demand forΒ NewtonΒ electric truck: SEV US Corp order book now standsΒ 255Β trucksΒ

Tanfield confirmed as largest supplier toΒ UK's Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement Programme

Renewed focusΒ on production readyΒ medium duty electric vans and light duty trucksΒ Β (Newton and Edison)

Withdrawal from electricΒ car-derived van developmentΒ :Β Termination ofΒ USΒ Ford Transit Connect project

Tanfield is pleased to announceΒ further developments from its associate company, Smith Electric Vehicles US Corp ("SEV US Corp").

SEV US Corp, together withΒ AM General, a leading manufacturer of military and commercial vehicles, headquartered in South Bend, Indiana, USA, is developing aΒ prototypeΒ electric version of theΒ gasoline-powered Long Life VehicleΒ forΒ the United States Postal Service ("USPS"). There are currentlyΒ approximately 178,000Β Long Life VehiclesΒ in service withΒ theΒ USPS.Β AM General will manufacture the chassis andΒ SEV US CorpΒ will supply the electric drive train, including the motor, battery pack, electronics and ancillaryΒ systems.Β

Darren Kell, CEO of The Tanfield Group Plc, said: "WithΒ AM GeneralΒ we combineΒ a global leader in specialist vehicles with a world leader in electric vehicle integration.Β TheΒ goal is to deliver an electric vehicle that is perfect for the United States Postal Service; a vehicle that is energy efficient, cost-effective, reduces US reliance on oil and lowers greenhouse gas emissions."

As announcedΒ on 6 August 2009,Β SEV US Corp won $10m in grant funding from the US Department of Energy (DoE), to facilitate its growth towards volume production andΒ to build a demonstration fleet of electric trucks.Β In addition, SEV US Corp customers have been awarded funding for 65 Smith Newton electric trucks, amounting to $4.5m, through the US Clean Cities Program. SEV US Corp is applying for more funding through the US Government "green vehicles" programmes.Β

SEV US CorpΒ has commenced production of the Smith Newton electric truck platform at its assembly facility in Kansas City, Missouri.Β Appetite for the Smith Newton truck is strong in North America and SEV US Corp now has anΒ order book ofΒ 255Β trucks.Β

In light of the swift growth in demand for theΒ production readyΒ Smith Newton, SEV US CorpΒ mutually agreed with Ford toΒ terminate itsΒ developmentΒ project with FordΒ of an electricΒ car-derived van basedΒ onΒ Transit Connect.Β Β In the short to medium term,Β forecast volumes did not justify the investment requirement and limitedΒ theΒ working capitalΒ available to support the growth of Newton. SEV US Corp believes thatΒ investing in theΒ existingΒ SmithΒ platformsΒ representsΒ a betterΒ use of its financial resources,Β allowingΒ it to take full advantageΒ ofΒ aΒ potentiallyΒ veryΒ sizeable marketΒ andΒ toΒ gain market tractionΒ more quickly.Β ItΒ was concerned that theΒ market forΒ electric car-derivedΒ vansΒ would becomeΒ increasingly competitive. InΒ Β North America, Ford still intends to launch its own electric version of the Connect.

InΒ other markets,Β the Board of Directors believes that the best strategy going forwardΒ for the CompanyΒ is to focus on preserving and enhancing Tanfield's market-leading position in the medium-duty commercial vehicle sector, through itsΒ many variants ofΒ Newton truck and Edison van platforms.Β Β Tanfield remains Ford ofΒ Europe's official collaborator on commercial electric vehicles,Β initiallyΒ focusedΒ solelyΒ on the Ford Transit platform, which is marketed as the Smith Edison.

Whilst consolidating its market-lead position in this sector, Tanfield continues to pursue an order forΒ the delivery of over 50 Smith Edison vans with a leading UK retailer.Β Β Additionally,Β Tanfield is now confirmed as the largest supplier to Phase One of the UK Government's Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement Programme. Tanfield will supply a total of 57 Smith Edison vans in the first phase.Β

Darren Kell added:Β

"Tanfield is gaining real traction with its core products in the electric van and truck sectorsΒ across the world"Β
