14Ā JulyĀ 2008
Lansdowne Oil & Gas plc
("Lansdowne" or the "Company")
Licensing OptionĀ Award
Lansdowne, the Dublin-based exploration company,Ā is pleased to announce that itĀ has beenĀ awarded aĀ newĀ LicensingĀ OptionĀ in theĀ NorthĀ CelticĀ SeaĀ basin, off the south coast ofĀ Ireland.
The Barryroe Licensing OptionĀ ("Barryroe Licence")Ā has been granted to Lansdowne (40Ā per cent), Island Oil & Gas plc ("Island") (30 per cent) and Providence Resources plc ("Providence") (30Ā per cent).Ā Lansdowne willĀ act as the operator of the licenceĀ for the period of timeĀ up to and including the acquisition of any seismic dataĀ over the acreage.Ā Thereafter,Ā ProvidenceĀ willĀ become theĀ operator for any drilling and development activities.Ā
The BarryroeĀ LicenceĀ is overĀ acreageĀ whichĀ lies directly belowĀ theĀ Ā Seven Heads Gas Field
Three previous wells testedĀ oilĀ at between 1,300 and 1,600 bopd
Oil tested was light crude (30 to 42Ā API, with a high wax content)Ā
Potential development synergies with otherĀ CelticĀ SeaĀ projectsĀ areĀ being reviewedĀ by theĀ Group
In the western part of theĀ Barryroe LicenceĀ acreage,Ā situatedĀ to the west of the producing Seven HeadsĀ GasĀ Field,Ā Ā theĀ shallower section above 4000ft sub-seaĀ is also included in the Licensing Option andĀ thisĀ is consideredĀ to beĀ prospective for gasĀ
The BarryroeĀ Licensing Option (08/1) coversĀ theĀ sameĀ acreageĀ included inĀ the Seven Heads Oil Licensing OptionĀ (03/5) previously held byĀ the Company plus the shallower section mentioned above. The new LicenceĀ has been renamedĀ Barryroe toĀ avoidĀ confusion with the Seven Heads Gas Field whichĀ isĀ partlyĀ situatedĀ above theĀ deeper oil accumulations.Ā The award of thisĀ LicensingĀ Option supersedes all arrangements under the previous Licensing OptionĀ (03/5), whichĀ ended when the previous Licensing OptionĀ expiredĀ in 2006.
Part of theĀ Barryroe acreage lies beneath the Seven Heads Gas Field, with the boundary between the two concessions lying atĀ 4,000ftĀ (approximatelyĀ 1,250m)Ā sub-sea.Ā Within the Barryroe area oil has been successfully tested at flow rates of between 1,300 and 1,600 bopd, from three exploration or appraisal wells.Ā The reservoir sands are in the Cretaceous Middle andĀ Lower WealdenĀ sequences between 1,400m and 2,300mĀ (approximately 4,600 to 7,550ft)Ā below sea level. The oil is light (30 to 42 degreesĀ API)Ā andĀ contains relatively high wax contents rangingĀ fromĀ 12Ā toĀ 22 per cent, whichĀ mayĀ require treatment to avoid production difficulties.
From the previous technical work carried out,Ā theĀ two mainĀ challenges to commercial development have been identified asĀ the reservoirĀ continuity andĀ the high pour point of the oil caused by the high wax content.Ā
The significant increase in the price of oil sinceĀ 2006Ā hasĀ materiallyĀ improved the likelihood that these reserves could be exploited commercially.Ā
The work programme for the new Licensing Option will focus upon these challenges and the potential synergies in reviewing development options in parallel with other established oil accumulations in theĀ CelticĀ Sea.Ā In particular theĀ appraisal and conceptualĀ development workĀ being carried out byĀ ProvidenceĀ onĀ otherĀ CelticĀ SeaĀ oil accumulations mayĀ haveĀ anĀ impact upon the development options being considered for Barryroe.
Dr. Steve Boldy,Ā CEOĀ of Lansdowne, commented:
"Lansdowne is delighted to be awarded this new Licensing Option and to be working withĀ ProvidenceĀ andĀ Island.Ā Potentially commercialĀ flow ratesĀ have been recorded from the Wealden oil accumulations in Barryroe butĀ aĀ number of sub-surface and engineeringĀ challenges remain to be overcomeĀ before commercialĀ development could beĀ sanctioned. However, with the current high oil prices, technical advances and the opportunity to co-operate with other potential oil developments in theĀ CelticĀ Sea, there is a good chance these challenges can be overcome.Ā All three companies have extensive experience of theĀ CelticĀ SeaĀ and I believe combining this expertise will give the best chance of a successful development."
This resource update has been reviewed and approved byĀ SteveĀ Boldy, Chief Executive of Lansdowne.Ā SteveĀ BoldyĀ is a geology graduate with aĀ Ph.DĀ from Trinity College Dublin and is a member of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain. He has 27Ā years experience in the oil and gas exploration sector and is a qualified person as defined in the guidance note for Mining, Oil & Gas Companies, March 2006 of the London Stock Exchange.

Notes to Editors:
Three wells within the Licensing Option area have tested oil:
48/24-1 drilled by Esso in 1973/1974 tested oil from Middle Wealden sands at an aggregate rate of 1300 barrels per day
48/28-1 drilled drilled by Esso in 1974 tested oil from a Middle Wealden sand at 1527 barrels per day
48/24-3 drilled by Marathon in 1990 tested oil fromĀ Lower WealdenĀ sands at an aggregate rate of 1619 barrels per day
