I would have thought that at the point they fell out of your ISA and into your trading account and therefore your entry into the realms of capital gains the acquisition cost at that point would be zero (the market value at that date) and therefore zero loss.
I very much doubt you can claim a capital loss
So slaughtering villagers in cold blood and baking babies in ovens is self defence.
At least when Israel kill innocents its sort of by accident.
Where do those Russian banks get their money from? Surely the whole economy isn't run by oligarchs. What about independent businesses< shopkeepers, etc.
Body Shop was way ahead of its time. Problem is with the rush to sustainability and social value it's got too much competition and it looks old and outdated.
If anyone can make it work it will be Next though I would imagine, especially if they pick it up for peanuts.
Where do businesses in Russia get their capital from?
But Russian domestic businesses access the international markets though right?
'the status of ezo allows their russian beneficiaries to obtain shares and assets of such companies in direct ownership through the court, excluding foreign holding structures (ihcs) from the chain of ownership, or transfer the right to them to someone else.'
If this were to happen Russia would basically shut themselves out of the international markets as no sane investor would never feel their money safe in a Russian asset again. I still don't see legally how it can stack up.
Alex - have a read of Frasers annual report and in particular their digital strategy.
They are both retaliations to countries being attacked though right?
I unless we are blaming Ukraine and Israel for being attacked?
It’s not uncommon for short selling to be halted during extreme turbulence. The UK did the same during the banking crash.
It will never be banned though as investors have to be able to hedge their risk and shares have to be lent in order to do so.
He could hedge his entire wealth.
He only needs to take a position, not make an actual investment.
does ma usually take companies private? i would expect this to be swallowed up by frasers if it was to happen. i’m not sure frasers shareholders would be happy though. i still think he is just building a stake and then would swoop in if the **** hit the fan.
There are various ways to hedge - doesn’t have to be in BH. You could hedge by setting up CFDs in stocks that react positively to increasing interest rates for instance.
The can set up rates swaps and all sorts.
There are loads of ways to do it and none would need to be declared and they would be commonplace amongst HNW individuals.
‘So Southcoast. Why is MA buying a very large stake? A seat on the board? To what end? I do not buy this" buying to learn nonsense."’
Look up Fraser’s digital strategy in their annual report.
This was always on the cards once the Sheffield automation was complete.
Why run multiple sites when you have all the investment and tech in a single place.
So why no guidance?
What is the reason behind no trading update.
The cynic in me says nothing good and an eventual update at the lower end.
The problem is SCB that unless something magical has happened here in the last couple of months the benefit on the underlying trend to online isn't accruing to Boohoo.
I'd be interested to see the impact of the new living wage in April which means that anyone 21 and over who works 40 hours a week will now have a minimum salary of £23,500. This could potentially boost our demographic unless companies start trimming back on younger workers in favour of experience.
The market seems saturated at the moment and neither is in a marketing leading position or in a particularly growthy phase to make them a tempting proposition.
If one of them was in a position to be rescued and could be picked up on the cheap then it would make sense.
I’m not so sure there would be a strong business case for a merger. What USP does either have that the other wants. They are too similar, cannot see a decent case for upstream or downstream integration.
‘ Exactly! They are a retail business not a property investor. Investors take a dim view of companies acquiring property assets, they used pure cash to buy this property and now are paying a big % on interest. Doesn’t make sense’
They’d take a dimmer view of spending £50m on stock after all the efforts taken to reduce holdings.
