RE: 'New variant' of coronavirus identified in UK, health secretary says14 Dec 2020 23:07
Hi Bermuda, it was stated that the 2m did not cover all the money needed for Covidity. In fact isn't the recent Redmile investment going to be (partially) used to make up the shortfall?
Secondly, imagine how much quicker the vaccine could have progressed with £5m or £10m? E.g. how many more staff Scancell could have hired?
Also don't forget Scancell had to bring out the begging bowl making that sky report...more time wasted. Was it four whole months before the funding came finally through?
So it's not just financial backing the government have lacked here but a huge lack of urgency, in fact that's probably just as big a factor. There was non stop talk about urgently finding vaccines back in Spring, apparently.
I genuinely believe Scancell could have followed a story similar to BioNtechs had the government taken more initiative/had more foresight. Not saying it can't still happen, but it will be in spite of the UK government IMO, not because of it.
And with regards to £2m being a healthy amount, in the context of what they have wasted on the pandemic, it's chicken feed e.g. "another" example of a dodgy government PPE contract today for £122m for PPE that isn't suitable for purpose, but it had Tory party connections again so no surprise. Shame Scancell/Nottingham, didn't have any large Tory party donors, would have definitely got 10s of millions.
All IMO of course, and my opinion could be absolute rubbish of course.
