Market Cap = SP×Number of outstanding shares.

Is that pointless in your opinion? My comment was based on an implied assumption of achieving the same Market Cap.

The buybacks reduced the outstanding number of VOD shares to 25,590,823,709 shares as of this morning's RNS (from 27,080,821,283 before the buybacks), that is a reduction of 5.5%. Without it the SP would be at 63.5p instead of 67p!

The number of outstanding shares = 27,080,821,283. This morning's RNS states that the number of shares outstanding = 25,918,699,085. A reduction of: 1,162,122,198 shares. However, it is important to note that c. 159,000,000 shares (my estimate) were awarded to Vodaphone staff and management since the start of the buybacks. Therefore, the total number of shares bought back is c. 1.321 bn shares.

Buyback is widely regarded as a stabilisation measure. Notice how they buy a few shares when the SP is above a certain short term average (e.g. 5 sma) but buy a huge number of shares when the SP is below it.

Please note that all % holdings have increased as a direct consequence of the ongoing buyback. Also, add to your list : BlackRock, which owns 1,743,606,604 shares according to the 31/07/2024 RNS. This accounts to 6.7% (not 6.5%) of the latest floating number of shares reported by this morning's RNS.

IMO, Vodafone intended adventure in Romania could be even worse than that of Spain or Italy. No wonder the SP is marked down.

It is not just the realised price, but also the volume.

Reducing opex to $4.2 /bbl (from $5.6/bbl) while production rate close to maximum results in higher FCF and faster recovery of historical costs. Good vision from the BOD given the circumstances. High production rate during July and even higher during August. The shutdown of PF1 is only for 3 weeks in November (usually a quite month for local market). Good choice of timing. Cash balance is high, but still no dividend or buyback declared! I maintain the view that there is no need to keeping the cash balance this high.

Production volumes are very good during the first half of this year and consequently the FCF; hence the buyback and dividend already paid. I am confident this has continued during July and August, so further distributions (should be) possible. The outlook beyond that and until the ITP is re-openned depends on whether GKP can continue receiving 36% of gross sales even after the CRP is normalised. In that regard I am optimistic.
