You can't do that under the accounting standards. As soon as you recognise value isn't recoverable you have to take the loss immediately. It's like an onerous lease provision. So something has changed since November. Maybe they want the tax benefit.

I work in M&A but not a tax expert so not 100% sure. Sorry.

I am surprised due to the nature of how you are required to recognise impairment of goodwill and other intangibles in line with IFRS standards.

Are you not surprised how they're impairing in chunks given the requirements under IFRS then?

I'm sure that tax advantage is ending (read it somewhere recently) which is possibly why they brought it forward. Makes sense.

It's just debit impairment credit goodwill. Doesn't affect EBITDA as it's quasi amortisation charge (just accelerated) and non cash. Affects balance sheet but not working capital or net cash / debt.

I agree market has known for a while. Maybe management didn't want to obliterate the SP and the Divi news can offset it. Reuters piece this morning didn't even mention impairment.

Dividend is a good sign but might be offset by the intangibles write down. Appreciating no cash or margin effect I'm still surprised they're still writing down the HPE at this stage.

Agreed. Big things to look out for:

1. Director comments on forecast / no further impairment
2. EBITDA margin in line with expectations set out in the interims
3. Dividend reinstatement

I agree further impairment of goodwill is unlikely. If you're going to make an impairment, for the market you take it in one lump rather than keeping on adding.

Haven't held this for a while but well done to those of you who are. This is a great stock.
