Europe to be fair is more likely to club around RR than Millipede who's looking for his next job after as he believes the democrats get back in in 2029 in the US, just as we all knew Sunak would head stateside PDQ.

Sadly I suspect more to do with Solar and Wind, but we can be ever hopeful that SMR will be a beneficiary, particularly around former Nuclear sites.

I can only speak from my own experience as someone who was responsible for buying 50 - 350m of kit annually at the point I'm speaking of. The level of IP theft / reverse engineering was extraordinary at that point, the bankrupting of the companies i worked with and for then were broken up and their IP purchased very cheaply. Today some 20 years on they certainly are producing a lot of ideas and equipment of their own, so no we don't own the monopoly we once did.

No they don't want to be reliant on the west, as we shouldn't be on them either, though we do seem to be. I do agree with you though that we need to grow a pair and start to reinvest in our own capabilities, sadly the political will and business nouse of our governments doesn't seem that capable.

When you look at the fact that the 4 plants slated to be shut down and decommissioned in the next 3 years, the loss of the potential 5GW of generating capacity is mindblowing. Whilst in theory Hinkley C will bring back 3.2GW in 2027 who knows if that'll happen. Today we're only currently producing 3.5GW (nuclear) and importing 4.3GW from the EU, all looks pretty fragile to me and yet they still prevaricate over RR SMR

The problem all the west has is that due to the amount of 'stuff' the west manufactures in China we're providing them with a huge amount of money to enable them to target industries with huge subsidies. I was historically in Telco, they built kit that fitted in the same back planes, ran the same software and looked identical apart from the label, then sold it at 1/3rd the price, long enough that many top companies went bust. They're doing it in the automotive world and they'll do it in this one too. Rolls etc need to be up on their game and be prepared for a price war .....

When I got made redundant in 2017 the grid was within 1% of our max needs. Now we seem to regularly import 7-15% sometimes more. As has been said we need base load and I’d say 50% as a minimum, but the. I’m pretty and wind and particularly solar in the uk

I have a theory - downgrade to hold from buy, based on the valuation which we've all known about for ages. Shares drop, as of writing 3.25%, results come out and suddenly the valuation isn't so high after all, shares rocket based on the next tranche of forecasting, off we go again around the loop ........

It wasn't just not very windy, solar was virtually non existent too.

What get me is that we are consistently (not always but) importing more energy from france (win win EDF) than we produce in nuclear ourselves. With 4 reactors due to be closed by EDF in the UK in the next couple of years we're really going to be in for some very expensive energy when the weather does what it's doing at present.

I don't blame RR not responding to whinger walsh who did a great job of trashing BA's reputation, they have the cures in hand for the known problems.

It's been life changing for me over the last 5 years, gained a few more grey hairs along the way and certainly didn't expect to be in the position i've happily found myself. My somewhat green son said of my various investments, "not very ethical" to which I replied " I take it you won't want your inheritance then", he spluttered replying "I wouldn't say that"!

Strange how investment companies say historically incoming Republican governments in the US traditionally are bear markets for the first 2 years as opposed to the last 2 years for a democratic one?

in the unstable world we live in today, underground facilities sound like a good idea, however the cost of the works, suitability of the terrain to house underground facilities is another matter. if you consider where the reactors are likely to be sited, predominantly nuclear existing sites, they're in area's where you probably wouldn't want to go underground, dungeness, bradwell bay for instance. in terms of 'old tech' we're talking (correct me if i'm wrong) being fuelled for 60 years so reliable old tech with that life isn't a great ****ue. by the time they are decommissioned fusion will be a thing, the forever 40 years away seems to be reducing and i suspect the technology will be up and running commercially in 20-30 years if we believe the hype.

I believe because he thinks private industry will stump up to take a few of the big power hungry elements out of the 'public' domain to power data centres. Of course what he's looking for is his next job in 5 years, because he'll be needing one.

The trick I think they're missing is caused by taxing the oil companies out of the north sea rather than giving them CO2 credits for building nuclear infrastructure. BP for instance, existing relationship with RR could easily offset a huge amount of tax by building SMR's and 'operating' or paying RR to ......

I pay into my HL SIPP, they manage the 20% tax element for me, takes a few weeks. Works well
