"A new study conducted by a team of U.S. scientists has found that the COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer (PFE +0.1%)/BioNTech (BNTX -2.1%) and Moderna (MRNA +0.7%) remain effective against the coronavirus variants first detected in India. "What we found is that the vaccine's antibodies are a little bit weaker against the variants, but not enough that we think it would have much of an effect on the protective ability of the vaccines," senior author Nathaniel "Ned" Landau has told AFP." . . . . . .

Konar - it is an intriguing (though IMO unlikely) possibility that the Govt's proximity to Scancell's 'Covidity' might be triggering 'Official Secrets' obligations, explaining the recent lack of news. Nothing can be ruled out. 'Covidity is potentially sensational. Wait and see I guess . . .

Hi Krafty - yes the trial should be happening - between 6 and 32 weeks time. Let's hope sooner rather than later that's all.

. . . and again "Human trials of the vaccine will begin in the second half of this year . . . " - well I make that about 6 weeks, (at the earliest) and 32 weeks, (at the latest). Soon please team !

Roses Fri. 18.57 - as you suggest, strong local action is the answer. Apparently the Indian variant is 20-50% more transmissible than most ! That is worrying as Pubs, Restaurants and Foreign Travel are reopened.

"Coronavirus vaccines are "almost certainly less effective" at reducing transmission of the Indian variant, the deputy chair of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has said. Professor Anthony Harnden told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "The vaccines may be less effective against mild disease but we don't think they're less effective against severe disease. "But in combination with being less effective against mild disease, they're almost certainly less effective against transmission."

However, "all the evidence so far suggests there is no evidence of increased severity of illness or that [the Indian variant] evades the vaccine," he added. It comes as England moves to the next stage of the lockdown roadmap on Monday, with pubs and restaurants able to serve people indoors again."

The last I heard was that the Indian variant may be 20-50% more transmissible but they cannot yet be sure. TCOY
