If not new, nice to see again. There's a pic in the link - can't quite see what's going on re. the dosing . . . .
""Scancell says preclinical data underlines potential of next-generation vaccine candidate as it prepares for phase I study
“Our next-generation COVID-19 vaccine has the potential to work alongside currently approved vaccines by protecting the population against new variants of SARS-CoV-2," said chief executive, Dr Cliff Holloway. Scancell Holdings PLC (LON:SCLP) said preclinical work has been published underlining the potential of its next-generation vaccine against variants of the COVID virus.
The news will provide a welcome boost to researchers planning phase I studies of SCOV1 and SCOV2, which were developed using the company’s ImmunoBody platform. The latest data showed the two vaccine candidates not only stimulated the T-cells in the immune system but also mobilised virus-neutralising antibodies that reacted with ’variants of concern’ such as the South African strain.
Scancell’s chief medical officer, Professor Lindy Durrant, described SCOV1 and SCOV2 as potentially providing an “extra layer of protective surveillance". In the same announcement, investors were told preparations were well underway for a two-stage clinical trial of the vaccine candidates taking place in South Africa and the UK
The COVIDITY study is a collaboration between Scancell, scientists in the newly established Centre for Research on Global Virus Infections and the Biodiscovery Institute at the University of Nottingham, and Nottingham Trent University. The programme, which has received funding from Innovate UK, will begin at the University of Cape Town Lung Institute and will involve unvaccinated, healthy adult volunteers.
It was not possible to carry out this very early work in the UK because of the rapid rollout of the vaccination programme, Scancell said. However, part two will take place in Britain. After a demonstration of safety, the company will seek approval from the Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency to begin an extension of the study in which SCOV2 will be given to healthy volunteers who have already received two doses of an approved vaccine.
The immune responses from this UK part of the COVIDITY study will allow the scientists to assess the ability of SCOV2 to boost the immune response against current and potential future strains of COVID in those who have already been inoculated. “There is a significant threat from future mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as we have seen with the rapid transmission of the Delta variant,” said Scancell chief executive, Dr Cliff Holloway.
