"The UK government has started ordering COVID-19 vaccines for a 2022 booster campaign, including a 32 million-dose order for the Pfizer/BioNTech shot, even before third doses for 2021 have been given the go-ahead. A report in The Times claims that the government is paying £22 a dose – up from an earlier price of £18 – for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine as part of a £1 billion deal for additional supplies, which is needed because existing stocks will be depleted next year.

The report, which has been neither confirmed or denied by the government, has raised eyebrows as the UK has yet to confirm that it will move ahead with a booster campaign this year, let alone in 2022. However, Health Secretary Sajid Javid said this week he expects third doses to be delivered to some people from next month. IMO RW there's no 'has to be' about the 'needle free' method being a proprietary one. If something new has been developed there might not be much publicity before the patent was under way ?

I wonder about the cost and practicality of these 'proprietary' systems, for a potential mass vaccination program ? Of course, in making their choice, Scancell have no doubt satisfied themselves on both those questions . . . .

Some interesting discussion about the possibility of BioNTech taking a special interest in Scancell. In this piece at least, they seem set on their own path - "BioNTech has suggested that giving booster doses of its current Comirnaty (BNT162b2) COVID-19 vaccine may be a preferable strategy to modifying the Pfizer-partnered shot . . . . .

On the call, BioNTech presented a swathe of data suggesting that Comirnaty is actually pretty effective at protecting against SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, including highly-transmissible delta which is emerging as the dominant strain in many countries, and beta which seems lost likely to resist current vaccines. The risk lies in using a new vaccine targeted against one of the current variants for booster programmes, only to be blind-sided by a new strain that could be far more effective at evading the immune response generated by current shots.

“Evidence points to robust vaccine effectiveness against circulating variants…including a high vaccine effectiveness against severe disease,” said BioNTech’s chief medical officer Ozlem Tureci on the call, whilst acknowledging that protection does seem to wane after seven to nine months.

My view that the announcement of the 1st dosing is unlikely to give us an 'inflection point' in the SP, is clearly outnumbered, but, as I said, I hope I'm wrong !

Konar I agree - the manufacture of 'Covidity' vaccine in trial quantity must surely have been completed in order to get the trial approved.

IMO it doesn't need a 'Communications Manager' to improve the level of media coverage - it's awareness of the 'need for' that's important and it's part of the job of the CEO to lead the process. Chester - IMO it's a false hope that 'first dosed' will provide any 'step function' in the SP. I think we'll have to wait for first trial data or a Partner for Covidity to appear.

Martin - it's just MHO but the wording of the CH RNS makes it quite clear, (to me) that he is leaving the Scancell orbit altogether - if he is still listed under Zakari I'd guess that is a delay/oversight somewhere . . . . C7 a deal could still be close, (or not), - if there's something moving maybe CH didn't like the direction/nature of it or maybe CH moving on was a requirement of the Suitor.

Hard to speculate - time will tell.

A cheerful conjecture from EE to which I would add the thought - surely interest has already been shown in Scancell's pipeline and maybe there have been discussions going on, in which case, I am absolutely certain, (as the main factor in motivating the other side is to convince them that the science stacks up), that Prof. Lindy is far and away in the best position to do it.

If a deal should be taking shape, there's appropriate help in Scancell plus Redmile and other Advisors. Prof. Lindy 'selling' the science first hand and in her own way, will be a significant step forward. After all, it's 'the science that will see us through' . . . .

I'm very encouraged by these events. IMO it's likely that the first 'deal' we will see will be on Covivity. In the circumstances in RSA atm, it'll be surprising if the trial of Covidity is not pursued with some vigour . . .

I'd be amazed if the hand of Redmile is not behind this change and Krafty I agree, it may well be that the 'Suitor' in an advanced discussion just didn't fancy CH in the picture. Who knows ?

Whatever the reservations, during Cliff's tenure, Scancell has come a long way with finance and infrastructure. Not far enough perhaps, but a long way.

Whether P/T or F/T, as far as any 'monetisation' is concerned, I think it will be a significant advantage for Prof. Lindy to be at the forefront in any discussions - she will certainly be able to explain the science with total conviction.

Agree Crumbs there'll be nothing major in the OXT update and with much understandable impatience here, any details of any progress will be happily received. The RNS about Covidity trials was just 5 weeks ago and progress is hard won in these times. The needleless injection modes are interesting so perhaps we'll find out more about that.
