Linfox President Doug Fryer APM GAICD joined CEO Linfox Special Projects Ari Suss, in welcoming ANCAP SAFETY and visiting Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks to the Australian Automotive Research Centre (AARC) in Anglesea, Victoria last week. With a vested interest in truck safety, attendees discussed opportunities for commercial vehicle safety improvements and toured the state-of-the-art test facility.

 

It was a great day for industry professionals to share ideas and thoughts, while supporting ANCAP’s expansion into testing of commercial vehicles, including light trucks and heavy vehicles.

Pilots falling asleep due to fatigue? 😴 Not exactly breaking news. We've known about this issue for over a decade now, with countless studies confirming fatigue in Europe. And let's not even start on the EASA FTL rules that were supposed to improve things – they've only made matters worse!

But here's another not-so-surprising fact: pilots working on atypical contracts, posing as self-employed, have been around for a while now. It's been a decade of battling with the European Commission 🇪🇺, trying to convince them to establish rules that put an end to this exploitative practice in aviation. 🛫

And let's not forget about pilots unfit to fly but taking to the skies. Guess what?

The same documentary from ten years ago highlighted this very issue. So why haven't things changed? Well, the answer is crystal clear – we need political will at the European Commission and a European Aviation Safety Agency that prioritizes #safety over cozy relationships with #airline CEOs. New self-driving cars legislation touted to make roads safer and boost growth

A new legal framework for self-driving cars provides an “unprecedented opportunity” to improve safety and connectivity on UK roads, as well as boost the economy, Parliament heard.

The Automated Vehicles Bill, which is set to introduce regulation for self-driving road vehicles, was welcomed by peers in Westminster during its second reading.

The Bill aims to ensure a high standard of safety for these cars, the threshold being that they must meet an equivalent level to that of a careful and competent human driver.

It also provides for the carmakers to take legal responsibility for how the cars behave, although distinguishes between self-driving cars that complete an entire journey automatically and those that complete part of a journey, requiring the option of handing back control to a human driver in certain contexts.

Automakers and Tier 1 AV suppliers shift their automated-driving ambitions to “eyes-off/hands-off” technology that ushers in SAE Level 3 capability for personal vehicles.

So-called “hands-off” driver-assistance systems are now ubiquitous enough that they scarcely merit particular attention — or explanation. They’re no longer exclusive to luxury brands, either; GM and Ford have migrated their respective Super/Ultra Cruise and Blue Cruise technologies to their mainstream models. But these systems’ one vexing tie to ADAS functionalities, as opposed to higher-level SAE Level 3 or Level 4 driving automation, is the requirement that the driver’s attention needs to remain fixed on the road ahead.

The vital next iteration of driving automation are “eyes-off/hands-off” systems that cut the cord with the harassing driver-monitoring camera that ensures drivers’ eyes are on the road when their hands are off the wheel — because their eyes no longer have to be on the road. Mercedes-Benz, the first OEM to market an eyes-off/hands-off system in the U.S. with its Drive Pilot, encouraged drivers at the media launch to play games on the test vehicles’ center touchscreen while Drive Pilot was engaged with navigating hardscrabble Los Angeles traffic. Principal suppliers and developers of eyes-off/hands-off technology agree that this is the realistic next phase in driving automation.

Contrary to what was widely expected, the mid-cycle refresh for the Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV won’t arrive for the 2024 model year, and has instead been deferred to the 2025 model year. As such, the 2024 Cadillac Escalade and 2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV feature a select few updates over the preceding 2023 model year. Now, production of the luxury marque’s 2024 model-year full-size SUVs has officially begun.

The start of regular production (SORP) of the 2024 Cadillac Escalade and 2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV was originally scheduled for early November 2023. However, the SORP was ultimately delayed, likely due in part to the UAW strike at the GM Arlington plant in Texas.

Nov 22 (Reuters) - New vehicle sales in the United States are expected to rise in November, a report from industry consultants showed on Wednesday, as demand for the latest models remains strong and inventories improve.

U.S. new vehicle sales, including retail and non-retail transactions, are estimated to reach 1,236,000 units in November, a 10.2% jump from a year earlier, according to the joint forecast report by J.D. Power and GlobalData.

"Sales growth is being enabled by improving vehicle availability," said Thomas King, president of the data and analytics division at J.D. Power, in a statement.

Despite the nearly six-week UAW work stoppage, retail inventory levels in November are expected to see a 7.5% increase from last month and a 43.7% increase compared with last year.

Inventory pile-up, however, led to a 1.9% year-on-year decline in transaction prices with an average price of new retail vehicles at $45,332.

Meanwhile, the forecast for 2024 is unchanged at 92.3 million units, an increase of 3% from 2023.
