On Wednesday, Ford reported its EV sales in the U.S. surged 88% during the first five months of the year, also defying the trend that Tesla reported. In May alone, Ford reported its EV sales in the U.S. rose almost 65% YoY as it sold 8,966 EVs. More specifically, Ford reported its E-transit van experienced a 77% rise, the electric F-150 pickup, the Lightning, reported an impressive 91% growth and Mach-E also went up 45.9%. What’s even more impressive is that Ford achieved such impressive growth amid intense competition from the EV king itself, Tesla, with the F-150 going against the Cybertruck and the Mach-E going up against Model Y on the SUV front. This is another blow for Tesla, after Ford already refuted Tesla CEO’s claims that everyone had a tough first quarter, during which Ford sold 20,223 EVs. But, Ford still expects its EV business to widen its EBIT loss this year, as it guided it to be between $5.5 billion and $5 billion for the full year.

General Motors (NYSE: GM) CEO Mary Barra assured investors that electrification is well underway with May being GM’s best ever EV sales month, defying the slowdown even the EV king, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA), is struggling with. The EV push is owed to ongoing growth for Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, GMC Hummer EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV, but more will be known when GM reports its second quarter results in July. Barra also noted that GM still expects 2024 to be a record year of EV sales.

A partnership between two of Canada’s largest aerospace companies has been awarded an $8.1 billion (USD) contract to provide flight training aircraft and infrastructure to the Royal Canadian Air Force for 25 years starting in 2029. SkyAlyne, which is simulator training company CAE and MRO KF Aerospace, will buy 71 new aircraft to be used by RCAF instructors to train new pilots for almost all of its frontline platforms. The Future Aircrew Training (FAcT) program will also support the training of air combat systems officers and airborne electronic sensor operators. Both companies are involved in the current training program.

In May, Ford nearly doubled sales of its all-electric F-150 Lightning pickups, compared with May 2023. Sales of the Mustang Mach-E EV also jumped, up 46% year over year.

The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. The automaker earlier this year said it would delay production of new all-electric vehicles to instead focus on offering hybrid options across its entire North American lineup by 2030.

Ford reported total year-to-date U.S. sales through May of 877,685 units, up 5.6% compared with the same time period in 2023. The sales have been led by a roughly 10% increase in SUV sales and 2.5% uptick in truck and van sales.

Ford EV and hybrid sales surge 65% in May

DETROIT – Ford Motor's U.S. new vehicle sales rose 11.2% last month compared with May of last year, boosted by strong sales growth for all-electric and hybrid models.

The Detroit automaker on Tuesday reported roughly 65% increases in sales of both hybrid and all-electric vehicles. That's compared with a 5.6% rise in sales of Ford's traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines.

The proliferation of BlueCruise can also be attributed to expanded availability across The Blue Oval’s lineup. The 2024 Ford Expedition, for example, recently gained the tech on additional trims, making it more widely available to buyers of the SUV. Looking ahead, even more vehicles will feature BlueCruise across their lineups, including the refreshed 2025 Ford Explorer and its cousin from the luxury side of things, the 2025 Lincoln Aviator.

Customers are enjoying the benefits of Ford BlueCruise, the automaker’s semi-autonomous driver assist feature, out on the highways. At this same time last year, BlueCruise users had racked up approximately 70 million miles, and now that figure has almost doubled as Ford owners leave the driving to their vehicles.

Ford CEO Jim Farley broke the news on social media, proclaiming that Ford BlueCruise users have now traveled over 200 million miles with the semi-autonomous tech active. For reference, Farley explains that this figure is “farther than a round trip from Earth to the Sun.”

There’s plenty to keep customers engaged with BlueCruise, thanks to BlueCruise 1.3, which debuted last year on the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The update built on existing features in Version 1.2, which includes Lane Change Assist, Predictive Speed Assist, and In-Lane Repositioning, Version 1.3 helps drivers stay engaged in hands-free mode longer, including around curves and in narrow lanes, up to three times longer than 1.2.

Fatigue Management

Due to the nature of mining work, fatigue is a significant risk,

particularly for our workers who perform high risk activities

as part of their work (such as haul truck drivers and heavy

equipment operators). To monitor fatigue and reduce the risk

of injury and equipment damage, our operations use fatigue

monitoring technologies, such as the CAT Driver Safety System

at Fekola, the Guardvant System at Otjikoto, and the DMS31

Driver Status Detections System at Masbate.

In 2023, we recorded a total of 3,856 instances of fatigue,

marking a 45% increase from the 2,662 instances noted in 2022.

This rise was primarily attributed to the elevated temperatures

in Mali throughout Ramadan. Upon detection by our fatigue

monitoring systems, these fatigue instances prompt an

assessment by a trained fatigue management supervisor.

This involves evaluating the operators against a predefined set

of criteria to determine their alertness and whether they can

safely continue their duties or should be temporarily withdrawn

from their work environment. Operators who are repeatedly

identified in fatigue events receive mandatory rest and undergo

re-evaluation before they are allowed to resume work.

Despite the increase in fatigue events, there were no recordable

injuries attributed to fatigue in 2023. However, we did identify

six instances of PFOs that caused minor to moderate damage

to equipment, with fatigue recognized as a contributing factor.

In response to the uptick in both fatigue events and PFOs

during the year, B2Gold is actively developing and planning

to implement a shift schedule adjustment for the warm season

and Ramadan. This adjustment aims to minimize the risk of

fatigue-related incidents.

Primed to make its official debut for the upcoming model year, the refreshed 2025 Cadillac Escalade will be highlighted by various updates to the exterior, interior, and powertrain. GM Authority expert photographers have already captured photos of several prototypes doing the rounds out on public streets. However, they recently grabbed pictures of an Escalade ESV unit sporting extra cameras in the windshield as compared to other examples we’ve covered. This begs the question, what could be the intention behind these additional cameras?

There are a few potential answers to this inquiry, including a next-generation GM Super Cruise (or what was to become GM Ultra Cruise) or additional and unannounced active safety features. Whatever the purpose is, it’s certainly not difficult to spot the extra cameras when facing the luxury full-size SUV head-on.

It’s worth noting that there are also smaller cameras fitted to the outside mirror stands.
