yes what seems to have happened is that GDR were able to prove performance with Biomek on respiratory swabs extracted through the BC system. Box ticked and this can be added to the instructions for use so that when the FDA finally give EUA approval they're good to go with swabs.

That's because it's swabs are the established sample type, comparing like with like so archived samples can be used.

The FDA have correctly identified saliva as a completely 'unknown' sample as far as COVID and sensitivity is concerned so have asked for a prospective study, no archived samples. That means GDR/BC need to run a new study comparing performance of saliva and compare with swabs obtained at the same tome from the same patient to demonstrate that saliva gives a comparative result to the swab. This just takes time. Everyone will be in the same boat.

iPhone. From the last RNS on the BC co-development, "The FDA places specific prospective clinical performance requirements on validation of saliva samples" which means there has to be a completely new clinical trial based on saliva samples. It's not that it hasn't worked.

Silles, agree, GDR is a professional use product and could never be a home test, but doesn't need to be. I suspect the sensitivity of these non-RT PCR tests will create more problems than they solve if they were deployed as home tests because of the high false negative rates. Testing will have to remain professional or controlled and systems like GDR will play an important role for example in high risk groups such as elderly care home and hospitals, even if they are not in the UK!

Thanks Silles. It's important people know, many of these antibody tests like the abc19 test cannot be self for home use. There is a different approvals process if the IVD is to be used at home or self-administered. They use the wording 'professional use' which has a very specific meaning. It means the test has to by law be administered by a professional trained person, such as a nurse or doctor. So it isn't a hone use product at all, at least not yet.

Hi Silles, the abc19 test is an test to see if you have had the virus and have IgG antibodies to the virus due to past infection, not if you have the virus. It is also CE marked for 'professional use', it is not yet marked as a home test I'm afraid.

I think DB has been clever in finding large niche markets that aren't the primary focus of other UK companies. When they start to generate sales I think we shall see he's wiser than most are giving him credit for.

I also wonder if the Company might split the business into a Pharma and separate diagnostics one now? Both require different BOD and strategies, just a thought?

I'm only invested in two stocks that have a COVID angle and this was the main reason I invested in Avacta - the combination of affimer and MS provides a really unique and powerful research tool and more research will become really important in the design of new treatments and vaccines. It's critical to think about the research tools as much as a the diagnostic tools. The level of information this provides about viral structure is a key USP.

A good sign too the news is the trading volume, this will push the share price up. Certainly somewhere between 120p and 150p today if the volume continues throughout the day

#gell, if there is any justice then if course it should. The market has been waiting for approvals, the price dropped when none came, so the start of the upward trend must now be due. I think back up to the £120-150p range ahead of the two big ones, India and US.

... South Africa approval important because it starts to open up a lot of the African continent. I think the African continent has been slower for the pandemic to take hold, but like India which was also later in the cycle there is a potential to need a lot of testing before a vaccinator or cure is found, if there are ever any solutions. Which approval comes next?!
