In the UK, there are approximately 700,000 live births per year. Assume that around 5-10% of these newborns might require antibiotic treatment including gentamicin, this would mean 35,000 to 70,000 infants could be treated with gentamicin annually in the UK.
In the US, with around 3.6 million live births annually, using a similar assumption of 5-10% needing such treatment, approximately 180,000 to 360,000 infants might receive gentamicin each year.
