After a quiet January so far at Belfast it looks like it will have a busy finish. According to Belfast Harbour on the 29 January two vessels are due into SRQ. First and the most interesting is the Excalibur a crosscheck on VesselFinder shows that this particular Excalibur is a platformsailing under the flag of Vanuatu and is 45 years old. The second one is the Dutch Pearl a crosscheck on vesselfinder indicates that it is a tug and is likely steering in the excalibur as they have the same arrival time.

This case would have at best persuasive value in the IM judicial review and this is a devolved matter so it would turn on the statutory provisions in Northern Ireland. I will update once I have read the case.

The MoD are not obliged to place orders with Scottish Shipyards. So if BAB or BAe want to win competitive tenders they need to put in competitive bids. If they do not then they should not go screaming to their unions friends about the result.

On the question of any takeover being blocked on competition grounds. Having positioned HARL as an alternative bidder to BAB or BAe I do not see the government allowing BAB or BAe to bascially restoring the duopoly that existed and which did not give value for money.

Trendz ref 11.42 post While it may be possible to sell IM I do not believe it should be. The reason I say this is that it gives HARL a guaranteed annual revenue stream for forty years. The range for the annual storage charge is £50m-£150m so even if HARL was to pay somebody to run it IM will cover a fair chunk of the overrall costs of HARL.

SidTheMan ref 09.14 post we need to separate two different issues a domestic takeover bid from either BAB or BAe which might face a Competition and Markets Authority investigation on the basis that such a bid would restrict competition. The other issue and which CitizenLane alluded to in there 09.19 post a bid from an overseas company. I know the 09.19 post referred to Navantia (UK) is owned by the Spanish Goverment. If Navantia was to attempt to take a significant interest in HARL then it would trigger a mandatory notification under the National Security and Investments Act. In such a case the BEIS Secretary of State could block the bid on National Security Grounds.

HarChris ref 08.50 post A takeover of HARL would be problematical as I have said before. Part of the probleis that I doubt that BAB or BAe would be interested in IM, Arnish or Methil. So they would be spending money to purchase non core assets which they will then spend money to dispose of. I agree any takeover bid is likely to be blocked.

oldtramp ref 20.26 post glad to seeyou back on the board hope you have been keeping well. I would add that the energy hub will be down a new link road from HARL (Arnish). I would not be surprised if the containers for the hydrogen will not be fabricated at Arnish. Stornoway Council seems to be developing a very interesting renewables business zone.

Si_Derman ref 19.03 post I think it has the largest fabrication footprint but I am not sure about overrall footprint when it comes to shipbuilding as I think that BAB and BAe may have more drydock space.
